Hello, Skyrider.
I hope you will live up to your screen name.
The drugs warned of are typically hallucinogens - LSD, etc. The problem here is one of loss of control. They might induce an uncontrolled experience which is usually also not understood very well or at all. Other side effects make this route unappealing.
While some people swear by "lucidity supplements" which can be legally obtained and used I personally would not rely on them.
The Gateway Experience tapes can be a good start. I was almost rose out of body (got scared and aborted) the first time I listened to a Focus 10 tape. Had a spontaneous nightly OBE shortly after without even noticing that I did a few weeks later. Many other interesting trance phenomena happened, too. So, it's a good route to explore, I hope you will have fun with it.
There's also exercises included to work on the body. I found these work well with conditions that derive from stress or tension, at least in my case.
One of the biggest steps towards OBE in my opinion is to have the intention to have the experience. Mind your dreams if they yield clues to any work done towards attaining that goal. It's generally a good idea to keep a journal of dreams to improve recall - the dream recall mechanism is very similar or identical to how we remember spontaneous experiences.
Good luck!
