I wonder the same thing, Joe. Whenever I begin to describe my own view of heaven to friends or family it never seems to match their idea of heaven. I like some of their ideas of heaven very much, though.
But, I do wonder about it, wonder what I really know anyway? If we are so conditioned by our experiences here on earth to like, love, dislike, hate this or that or the other....and if our experiences in the afterlife are at least in part created by our own consciousness, our own thoughts, how are these afterlife experiences colored by our conditioning?
There are lots of accounts of an afterlife in which what is "impossible" here is possible there, such as the blind being able to see, etc. etc.
How long does it take for our "conditioning" to fall off of us?
From what I read and experience, we are not alone, at least at certain stages of experience in the afterlife. And it doesn't seem like most people are greeted in the afterlife by "aliens" or creatures they don't recognize. We find ourselves, if this is all to be believed, many of us, in conditions which are lovely and familiar enough to bring us happiness. Familiar in that we can appreciate through new senses many experiences which bring wonder or satisfaction.
But, yes, I wonder what lies beyond. What "all" is there?
