Hi Juditha- Very often the spirits that go around trying to bother people are trying to prove to themselves that they have existence and power. That's why when R didn't get scared, they left.
Just as there are some people in the world who look good but who say and do unpleasant things, so too their spirits are just as unkempt when they die. But if you look a bit deeper, you'll notice that all the bluster and aggresion arises from a basic fear that they are unworthy and that God might reach down a give them a swift kick in their ectoplasmic backsides.
In my work I've discovered several basic things. One is that spirits have no power unless we give it to them. They can rant and rage, yell, scream and have hissy fits, but they remain powerless. As a medium you have a sense of the times that you open yourself to receive good mannered spirits and what they wish to say, and you also have a sense of the way in which you can ignore them. This is where to turn on the BS Filter, and not admit any spooks who can't behave.
Another thng I've discovered is that if you ignore the bluster and treat the spirits as if they are frightened human beings in need of reasurance, they often change their attitude and get interested in what you can offer them - such as how to get to the Light. I often ask for dead friends to call down to them to tell how much better it is to be in the Light than to have to go around hunting people and generating bad karma.
It's interesting that we have the tghree general basic methods for dealing with the dead represented on this forum. Your way is to use mediumship, which is a here-and-now approach in essentially a waking state. My way is through regression, indirect and through a trance. Bruce's way is to go into the spiritual borderlands and get them unstuck there using a different trance state. All three approaches do the same thing, and the same ideas apply.
There's no reason to feel that the spooks who feel obligated to haunt people are any different from those who get stuck in the astral planes due to pride, fear or whatever. To be sure, some of those spirits carry on as if they were about to end the world, but in fact, they're just as stuck as the ones that feel like they are driving an eternal tank in and endless desert, treading water forever, or any of the other ways to get stuck.
My suggestion is to recognize these guys for what they are - needy and frightened. Then you can offer to help them if you want. Or send them away if not.
