Hi Muffin I regret your loss and hope that you soon will be able to resolve it comfortably.
There doesn't seem to be any specific "where" for people to go, as much as a change of "how" they remain here. That you could smell his scent and feel his presence indicates that he hasn't "gone" anywhere - he just changed the way he does his thing.
Usually suicides involve a lot of negative feelings, and often guilt, fear and anger that someone would abandon us. Without going into the thousands of possibilities, the basic solution to all of this is love. Your ex-partner chose to continue in a path that many will criticize, but his basic needs remain much as they were. He needs freedom to continue along his way, meaning that he does Not need anyone clinging to him. This is one way that we create entities out of those whom we love, and the process only slows things down.
Families are an example. Often loss of a deeply loved Mom or Grandma leads to children clinging to these souls so tightly that they take up residence in the kids' minds, and can't get on with life (death is just a phase of lif) until the kids finally turn them loose.
Instead, total love, without any strings or provisions, will provide the support to continue into the "spirit world" as himself, and thus the chance to learn and grow. We generally recognize this as "going into the Light", which is a metaphor for returning to awareness of God. As a spirit he will then be able to return to spend time with you if you wish.
In the interim, if you want to find out how he's doing, I'd suggest a simple meditation in which you relax away all the thoughts of the day etc, and then jut ask him. - And wait for a response. It may be immediate and obvious, or it may be delayed and obscure. It will probably not be exactly what you expect. In any case, send love, and the rest will work out OK.
If you want more, look through some of Bruce's writings. Bruce is a medium, and has a definite skill in this area. His books give sound advice and techniques.
May love find you, dave
