What does 'New Age' mean?
Mar 19th, 2006 at 6:41am

I go to Barnes and Noble a lot, and I always go into the psychics, spirits, afterlife, paranormal, etc, section. There is a whole big section called 'New Age.' It has a mass of books by Edgar Cayce, John Edward, Sylvia Browne, George Anderson, astrology, astral projection, Astral world, etc. In short, it rocks.

What does 'New Age' mean? Smiley Cheesy Thanks.

Why are you asking this?

Here's M-W's take on it :

http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/new%20age

Obviously, Cayce's being put in the New Age section is just a convenience for the bookstore and does not reflect any adherance to the definition. But that's typical. "New Age" gets thrown around a bit especially if someone wants to be perjorative about a certain philosophy. Sort of used to imply a lack of depth in philosophical understanding in the topic at hand.

But maybe classifying the reading material as "New Age" is an improvement. I can remember when they used to call it all "Occult." For instance, something like Journeys out of the Body was in the Occult section.

New Age seems to mean anything that doesn't fall within conventional, traditional spirituality. How that plays out seems to depend on where you go. The key words for a lot of booksellers seem to be "weird" or "wacko" or "nuts." Looking at a New Age section of a bookshop and you'd believe New Agers believe anything.

Hey, at least we can find stuff. Didn't always used to be that way. In the old days they didn't just burn the books; they burned the people.

What a word means, is really up to what it means in you. Thus, a similiar case to the word "Christianity", which could mean something sacred, holy and Godly for one person, or it could mean something dogmatic, limiting, and even fear based which means unloving (ironically, fear or anti-love means anti-Christ) for another person.

In exactly the same way, the term "New Age" could mean either something positive for some people, or something not-so-positive, for other people.

Or myself personally, I use the word "New Age" to simply mean the collaborative and combined efforts of all (across both the physical and extraphysical, both terrestrial and extraterrestrial) who are working towards bringing a better tomorrow, a new age of understanding, progress and evolution for all of humanity, for the entire planetary civilization.

The work of the many individuals and organizations listed on my website (including Bruce Moen, incidentally), describes my personal take on the term 'New Age'.

No, Mair, posting exerpts from the Satanic Bible would top that, I think.

Truth is, woman wear bikinis every day, knowing full well it drives men nuts. They walk around almost naked, but that's ok by societal standards, but any man who says the wrong thing can be charged with harassment. Of course, it's up to the woman as to whether or not what a man says is sexual harassment or not, but the men don't have a choice about women wearing (not wearing) stuff that drives them nuts. Gee, there's faithfully married men, religious celibate men, impotent men, and others who really don't need (or want) to have a young hard-bodied woman's near naked tush displayed before them, but women don't care. Kinda of a double standard, don't ya think?

Rayan's avatars are symptoms, not the cause. If women would stop walking around wearing nothing but triangles and strings you won't see these reactions.

What do you think the police would do to me if I walked around wearing nothing but two tiny triangles and a string?

Even so, I agree his avatars are not condusive to the purpose of this message board.

Hi Lucy, I think the guy on the left is Boris Jelzin at a visit in Germany, he was quite (vodka?)-funny "conducting" an orchestra.
Spooky

Aah, no, seems not to be in Germany- so he used to do similar things on different places, haha.

I like girls in bikinis- but it seems they don't like me Tongue . Well, but there's some truth in it what Rob said.
(Oh well I said "girls"- not correct)

yeah see I think it is true that the sexual harassment works more in one direction. I personally got tired of the Vicky's Secret banner ad that used to run on the 'net, because why should I have to have some woman's cleavage in my face all the time? Or deal with it at work, where if a guy says the wrong thing he can be in hot water. But sex is the opiate of the masses.

And I don't think this situation is disconnected from the new age era, because I can think of it as a psychological growing pain. 'New age' indicates a high degree of tolerance, but sometimes what is being tolerated is ridiculous. This will probably continue until we collectively reach a new level of emotional maturity.

Mr. Yeltzin actually looks to me like he's trying to be a preacher at an old time revival. Conducting an orchestra makes more sense.

"New Age" typically refers to a synthesis of "I Am God" theology and a reincarnationism which is informed more by channeling and past life regression than by Far Eastern religion traditions.  Alternately, "New Age" refers to astral exploration and various forms of divination such as astrology, magic, palmistry, numerology, card-reading (e. g. Tarot), and Ouija boards and their spin-offs.

I realize that Rob, about the symptoms and not the cause. Tell me, do you look when you see women wearing nothing but triangles and strings? I just don't feel that it belongs here, my opinion only. Wink

I really don't think Ryan's avatars mean anything ,if he gets some joy out of them so be it. I mean its all a bit precious to judge someone based on something that in all truth is so light hearted.

But hey if it rocks your world.

What's up with the prudery, Mairlyn? I didn't have
you figured for a fundie Christian...
This isn't 1898, people. It is 2006! I don't see anything wrong (or offensive for that matter!)
with that little display of Ryan's. (Lemme guess... if those girls were wearing whalebone corsets and hoop skirts with bloomers, you wouldn't be complaining..!)
Maybe the world would be a better place, without all the medieval superstition/cum Victorian pseudo-philosophical booga-booga regarding sexuality. Don'cha think?

Do you have a problem with the beautiful Amy Dumas and Stacy Keibler from WWE? Smiley Cheesy

I like the fact they are in bikinis.

Women wearing bikinis and voting for U.S. presidents is sign of women having free will in todays society. I guess you don't want women to have any rights.
