Is the Mind Awake/Body Asleep state a must?
Jan 31st, 2006 at 3:54pm

I was reading some of Bruces posts on AstralPulse.com,and there was a bit about the trance state not being necessary, that simple relaxation was enough. I was under the impression that settling into Focus 10 was the same as going into trance,I've always seen it refered to as the Mind awake/body asleep state,is this not the same as the trance state?
I've been using Wave One of the Gateway series for over 3 years on and off,and I've always felt that I never actually reached Focus 10,but now I'm beginning to wonder if I was waiting for something to happen that was never actually going to.I can reach a reasonable level of relaxation now, what would you think is the best thing for me to start doing now? I've just ordered Bruce's 5th book too,so hopefully that should be able to sort out any misconceptions which I have.

Hi Mark,

Read the new book.  Be aware that people are trying to change the focus of their consciousness, however, our waking consciousness is by no means an "undesired" state.  Thus, to shift one's awareness, TMI uses focus levels, astral travelers try to concentrate on vibrations and "get out" of their bodies, shamanistic rituals may use repetetive drumming, yoga has its own exercises, breathing, etc.  Whatever floats your boat.

I believe that Robert Monroe tried to forge a pathway that worked for him.  Hemi-sync sounds have worked for many.  They may or may not work for you.  But don't get hung up on reaching one focus level.

Best to you,

Matthew

The idea of "mind awake but body asleep" essentially means that the body is no longer interfering with perception. A silent mind that is so intently focussed on its topic, whether internal or external, that it no longer mumbles and jabbers, is the desired state. It is available through walking meditation,  prayer, intense emotion, meditation etc. However, it is usually easiest to put people into a  trance by relaxing away all the bodily activities and stimulii on a sleep-like state, so that the mind is still conscious but the body has become inert - more or less.

Hi Mark 1977,
often during a Focus 10 session I wondered if I'm in it or not, but when it came to its end I was surprised that I was obviously deeply relaxed as if I had slept, I just didn't realized it during the F10 state.

Dave, when I read your post, a special consciousness state came into my mind, it's when I do exercises which are intended to manipulate the energy bodies, for example to draw energy into the main middle spine channel at the nable spot. On the one hand, there's a lot of imagination involved and this provides a pretty good blockade of physical perception. On the other hand, this exercises sometimes have a direct effect on the physical body, like sudden contractions of various muscles. So, you never know what that state is, no body relaxation, but definitely a sort of trance.

Mark and Spooky,

Thanks for addressing this question.   In working with my complete set of Gateway CDs, I have been perplexed, even annoyed, by the casual assumption that this state is easily identified.   When I follow the meditative instructions, I get very relaxed, but can never honestly claim that my body is actually asleep while my mind is awake.   This doubt makes me wonder whether I've actually achieved the intended state.  Apparently I'm not alone in this concern.

Hi Spooky-

Yeah, that's what I mean. It isn't necessary to "not have a body", but merely to get the body quieted down to the point that you are not limited by ongoing BS , a chattering "monkey mind"  etc.

When you can manipulate your energy to make things happen in the various chakras, you have "out the body to sleep" in the everyday sense, and have awakened it in the psychic sense.

I believe the answer to the initial question in the thread is that the mind awake body asleep stage is important, but not essential to refocusing our awareness.

I still find it useful to focus on keeping alert as I fall off to sleep.  On occasion, I have been amused to hear my deep breathing as a person does when they are sound asleep, but I am really mentally awake.  However, I can not hold the state very long (unlike Swedenborg).  Don had posted that this state was crucial for Swedenborg to have his travels and revelations.

So I think it is a good exercise to try either while falling asleep or after just waking up.

"Focus 10" is a pretty broad term. I think this may be interesting for you:

What are the focus levels?

-> Focus 10 - Mind Awake/Body Asleep

What is Phasing and how can I do it? ("Noticing Exercise")

Many thanks for your replys, that seems to have answered my question.
Maybe I can reach focus 10 after all,so my next question has to be where do I go from here,do I have to make an effort to get to Focus 12 now,or is there another direction you might advise me to take? As I don't have Wave two of the Gateway Series, how would you recomend I reach Focus 12?

Hopefully my guidebook and cd's should arrive soon from Bruce,I'm sure that will point me in the right direction.

Hi again Mark1977,
without HemiSync recordings, I would recommend you take the F12 label which is "Expanded awareness", and when you are in relaxation/F10 express your wish to go to F12, and that you would appreciate if someone could help you. I'm sure there are enough accessable entities floating around to take you there.
