Here is how I envision December 21, 2012. I go to work like every other ordinary working day. It's a good day, and a bit quiet. The people around me are in a pleasant mood, as it is a Friday, and the end of their working week.
The next day is the beginning of our winter vacation period, so double happiness for everyone I know. People will even hug each other goodbye that day, some of them, and wish each other well.
I will be anticipating a short holiday with my dog and some members of my family. I will be looking forward to a new year, and to discovering ways to make it one of the best of my life.
Every new day is an opportunity to be a better person, and to make a better plan. Each day we are given 24 hours to use our resources well. My intention is to be happy that day.
There are always circumstances that may appear as obstacles to our happiness, but a little bit of good health and good cheer is an opportunity to help make the world a better place, so why not?

I am therefore not informed about all of the claims about the calendar 2012, and supposed changes to the earth consciousness or whatever. I'm sorry if that sounds trite. I write this introductory paragraph as a disclaimer but I don't think that discounts completely what I am going to say. First, I have a related story.
I remember a preacher I used to listen to on the radio who used to claim the world was going to end in 1993. He had biblical interpretations of obscure Old Testament prophecies and such to back it up. It freaked me out. However the world did not end. I quickly realized it is best to live life as if your life could end at any time, but also to live life fully; free of fear of the change, as change is inevitable, as the Buddhists would emphasize. We will all die, and the world will end at some future date (the sun will go nova eventually, after all), but just because the Mayans created a calendar that didn't plan far enough in advance doesn't mean that everything will change towards the end of this year. Life will almost certainly just go on. I respectfully suggest we deal with that reality and move on.
