DreamBliss,
It is all about intent. It is also about your belief systems. You believe you are a consciousness confined by a physical body. This isn't really true. The deeper truth is that consciousness is primary, and interpenetrates the physical world - so that there is an illusion that the physical world is primary.
In effect, we always have the ability to engage in non-physical conscious activities, but first most of us need to relax (meditation) enough to be open to it. This requires unlearning whatever belief systems we have that tells us we are a soul encased in flesh.
I have not practiced astral projection techniques, because I believe projectors miss the point. They focus on various techniques to sense vibrations and pull their astral forms out of the physical body. However, this feeds into a false belief system that our astral body is a real discrete vehicle, separate from our physical body. It also feeds into the false notion that the astral form will then travel around in the physical world like some disembodied ghost.
At some point, we find that we are pure perception - pure consciousness, and that we have to give up the notion that the vehicles (be they physical or astral bodies) are the key to liberation or enlightenment. That takes going from the "how" of consciousness, to the "why." And the "why" tends to lead one to the concept of love (if you follow the discussions on the board).
That is how I see it, anyway.
Getting back to your question, I believe it is all about intent and conviction. If you feel it in your "gut," and set intention properly, you will likely achieve success of some kind. If the target is not real, you may still achieve success, just not in the way you predicted.
