Hearing my name in my head as I drift off to sleep
Nov 6th, 2011 at 5:33am

Lately, at least two times, maybe three times, since I have been off from work for a few days feeling depressed with not much to do except sleep, I have been somewhat jolted hearing my name as I am falling asleep. I am wondering what the odds are it is just me wanting to keep myself awake instead of falling asleep. But, you know, I rarely think of myself by my name. I can think of only two things:

1. I am trying to remain conscious and thinking my name in my head, calling to myself to remain conscious.

2. A Spirit is calling me by name and I am able to hear the call in this semi asleep state.

That used to happen to me quite a lot when I was a youth/young man.  he he  Gives you quite a start doesn't it.

It was some years after those startling name callings on the edge of sleep, that I learnt to leave my body. Then decades of adventure followed.

I wouldn't be concerned about those name callings. Attribute no credibility to it; no weight on it either way. Just notice it; observe it. If eventually you are able to remain rested and the speaker continues to say more, then just listen but give no more credibility to the personage or content of its speech than you would anyone else; that is assume no authority upon it; use your own judgment, your own reason, your own assessment, and remember you are responsible and accountable for your self, and you answer for yourself. No one, no voice or spirit guide will answer for you, or take accountability for you. So be aware, use your own judgment and be your own person. And there will be many adventures and learning experiences ahead.

If the verbal cortex is active (or becomes activated), then inner-experience processing  - can involve audible verbal messages. One of brain entrainment recordings I created recently is capable of producing such phenomenons pretty often, at least according to my beta testers (I had similar adventures). I'm not diminishing the content of experiences; just referring to the form in which they can occur. Verbal coretx is among higher brain functions (related to daily self), that why on the brain level - "non-verbal" communication is easier.

It could be any number of things, but consider it might just be the hypnagogic state which is often auditory in nature.

I've only once experienced hearing my name spoken when no one was there.  I remember it like it was yesterday, but I was about 22 then, sitting at work during my break.  It scared me quite a bit back then and I told myself I never wanted that experience again.  I have since attributed it to what I've called "The Voice" in many of my psychic and spiritual experiences.  I chalk it up to the voice of my Guidance.

I have heard these clear voices several times. Most recently, I heard my wife's voice telling me I had to get up and go into the next room and wake her up.  She said she was having a nightmare and needed to be woken up.  The voice was very clear, however, I listened to it, and judged that it was not telling me the truth, and I let her sleep. She reported no nightmare when she woke up, although she may have forgotten it.

I thought I'd throw in a personal one about voices that is along the subject of this forum. About 18 months ago while asleep, my friend and neighbour, an indigenous native of the land I live in, come to me and asked me clearly if I could come over and do two jobs for him. I could not see him clearly, but only hear his voice. I went to ask him what jobs, but he quickly left, leaving me with the impression he had died and that I will see the jobs to do when I come over to his house. (I live in a fairly isolated place where neighbours look out for each other) I awoke and laid a while because it was early, and I wondered what I should do. Then the phone rang. It was his upset wife. She said she has just found her husband dead and asked me to come over. I went over and immediately I saw what the two jobs were that needed doing, and I did them. The funeral was on his property, an eagle attended and watched the proceedings, and afterwards I left and walked home and the eagle escorted me overhead, and when I was home the eagle thanked me (by telepathy) on my friend's behalf for doing the jobs and then it flew back to my friend's property. His wife later told me the eagle stayed until the last of the family left the funeral gathering, and then the eagle looked at her, then flew away.

My feeling is that it may very well be a spirit guide of some kind trying to contact you, and as you were passing through the deeper levels of your consciousness into sleep, you were aware enough to consciously receive the signal from whoever is trying to make contact.  This has happened to me as well.  The first time it happened was when I first started to have out of body experiences about ten years ago.  As I was drifting off to sleep after a series of OBE attempts a loving male voice said, "I am proud of you my son" and I felt a gentle hand touch my shoulder.  I would work on achieving and sustaining that level of deepness without falling asleep.  You may find yourself quickly understanding where the voice is coming from.

hmm...a good point, Planetaziemia. Body language, especially adrenal and stress related, is known to be old brain and tends to be automated/reflexive. Higher brain skills such as language and intricacies can be easily overridden by the hormonally driven old brain impulses. But I wonder what physiological mechanism occurs in the brain and endocrine system when fear is consciously converted/up graded into creative energy and fine thinking and motor skills return, despite the threat and adrenaline remaining. There must be a chemical/hormonal support for the higher brain, to facilitate the mental clarity that occurs. I realise this is more suitable for the fear thread. But your point above got me wondering. I suppose our medical scientists will know such answers one day. We have so much to learn about our bodies, let alone our souls, mind and personality mechanisms. I do wonder what sort of knowledge the coming centuries will bring.

Here is a link to the recording I mentioned:

http://conscious-sound.bandcamp.com/album/brainwave-journey-1-contact

Lossless FLAC or 320kbps MP3 download. Online playback includes only the escerpt, so you can know what is inside.

I'm curious if some of you will report similar experiences about verbal messages as my beta testers did. And I'm curious too, if this will happen during the first 1-2 sessions or later (-;

I had this, too. One time I heard my name called as if someone spoke it right in my ears (in both ears) so it almost threw me out of bed; I managed it to remain calm and realized the voice was coming from someone I had met some days before, and then he told me something, in words and visual impressions. He could not verify the contact, but could verify some of the informations I received.

About every two months there are two or three days in a row when I would hear voices or sounds while falling asleep. I don't know where it comes from.

I've heard my name several times in the past. After trying a series of responses to no effect I deduced the occurrences weren't from some entities trying to get my attention, and nothing ever resulted afterwards to coincide with these 'events,' so I concluded it came from within my head.
