I had the same kind of surprise when I first got the Guidebook and had my first retrieval right away. I too wasn't expecting anything so fast, especially anything "real". In fact I had no idea what to expect or what it should be like.
It sounds like you did have an OBE. It seems like a lot of people new to it do experience the buzzing and the paralysis.
Anyway, my advice is along the lines of Bets too. I don't know how far in the Guidebook you are, but I'd say that before you begin trying to go back to your dad, take a moment when you're in a normal frame of thinking, not afraid or worried about what to expect, and just allow yourself to set the intent you want, very clearly. I see it as a 3-part thing. First there's the thinking part, "what do I want to do?" That's easy to figure out. So it might be, "I want to visit my dad again, see how he's doing, and help him move on where he needs to be. I don't know how to do that so I want a helper." It may not feel like much, but knowing your intention clearly already creates it.
The second part that I do is what makes your intention feel like it's coming to life. That is now to not be thinking, but just be feeling. Even before you begin any retrieval exercises or techniques, just sit and feel your intention with your heart. This energy helps give it power and strength. This may be hard for some people to do, and if so Bruce's book describes the Feeling Love exercises that you can practice any time. It's really a good and important exercise to practice. Third, begin your exercises.
This is a breakdown of how I do things, but once you get used to the process you will find you can do it faster, more naturally, and the lines will blur as to which part you're on. They'll just blend. Sometimes I will break it down over several days. It may take me a while to formulate an exact and clear intention just on a thinking level. Then I might take a few days of really feeling the emotions that my intent give me. You know what it's like to build up the desire of really wanting something and being excited about it? That's what I mean. So I might do this for a few days and then tell myself that at such and such day and time is when I'm finally going to do the retrieval. Of course it's not necessary to "gear up" for it like that, but sometimes that format helps get you going without fear or doubt.
