A friend of mine says that dogs have a collective conscious and have no sense of self, that the closest they can focus to themselves is as a pack. That when they die, they simply return to their collective conscious, and are not aware that they are no longer that golden retriever, or my westy "Stinky". They are aware of and care for those in their pack and their sole focus is its wellbeing, love and protection...something deeply profound in that. She didn't go into cats, horses and other animals, but the dog stuff was interesting.
Also, from a reincarnational aspect, apparently their souls also keep an ego of sorts...a collection of experiences held by that portion of the collective, and take it back to the overall collective, but they are in a different dimension of heaven and human souls do not mix or move between incarnations with theirs (transmigration of souls).
Beyond this I have not spent much time researching. Hope it helps.
