But, Starcraft, it doesn't suck for very long!

The Buddhist view is that we should have compassion for all sentient beings because every sentient being was our mother at some point.  Buddhists take the long view.

A friend of mine says that dogs have a collective conscious and have no sense of self, that the closest they can focus to themselves is as a pack.  That when they die, they simply return to their collective conscious, and are not aware that they are no longer that golden retriever, or my westy "Stinky".  They are aware of and care for those in their pack and their sole focus is its wellbeing, love and protection...something deeply profound in that.  She didn't go into cats, horses and other animals, but the dog stuff was interesting.

Also, from a reincarnational aspect, apparently their souls also keep an ego of sorts...a collection of experiences held by that portion of the collective, and take it back to the overall collective, but they are in a different dimension of heaven and human souls do not mix or move between incarnations with theirs (transmigration of souls).

Beyond this I have not spent much time researching.  Hope it helps.

Maybe dumb dogs don't have a sense of self. I have two dogs that are certified medical assistance dogs and they have very strong egos and know who other people, dogs, objects are by name. Maybe I'm not understanding your friend's analogy correctly..

It's my own interaction with one of my dogs and other dogs that really make me see that they aren't just animals. They have their own personalities. One of my dogs is about the equivalent of an individual with Downs Syndrome but we love him all the same. The other has his own unique personality that i've never seen in another dog and I've noticed that among others. And then my cats might as well be dogs because they can be just as affectionate. The other day my step mom was walking around the neighborhood and saw a person walking their dog (which was a juvenile) and both of our cats ran up and surrounded my step mom and started hissing at the dog, as if protecting their mom. Now how many cats do that?

Then there's primates. When you have animals that can create art you have some something pretty amazing happening. Elephants too. Anyone ever see the video of the Elephant that painted with its trunk? Pretty cool stuff. Humans aren't the only unique life on the planet. Animals have a purpose too.

Another thing I was thinking is that animals do have souls, but their souls are of a different nature than ours.
