How does memory work in the afterlife?
Feb 28th, 2008 at 8:27am

Hi All,

I have often pondered on how memory would work in the afterlife where the concept of linear time appears to be non-existence. If we were able to extent physical life the brain having finite storage capacity would become overloaded after say a thousand years and would have to be cleared out, something like a computer system restore.

Our brains have to sublimate most of its information and memories into the subconscious to avoid confusion and enable a person to address the immediate actions and reactions necessary to sustain physical life.

Now based on my nde, it seemed as if I somehow lived in an infinite moment observing everything at once through the mind of God. However, memory in the afterlife and how it works remains an enigma to me.

Have the forum any thoughts on the matter? I would be most interested to read any responses.

If there is a hall of knowledge, wouldn't everything be there? Why would we need "all that" for what we do there? Wouldn't we only need what we would actually want to use? Whatever we don't need, well, surely it can be of use to some soul, if for no other purpose than education.

In meditation the mind expands.

In the afterlife, with no physical body, wouldn't our minds be able to absorb whatever we need from this vast repository?

And to let anything float away, as well? I don't get the sense that the spiritual world really cares what we choose to carry with us, as long as it flies.

peace, blink

I figure awareness has no bounderies and can understand everything that takes place within it, until preferences cause it to be limited.

Instead of looking at the beauty of an entire valley, some people choose to see just parts of the valley, because of their fears and preferences.

Alan, some people believe that the brain doesn't really hold or store memory (though it does seem to get conditioned to certain patterns), but more so acts like a receiving-resonating/sending device.

If a human wants to be fully aware of all there is, i believe they must transcend their physicality.  You do this by speeding up the vibrations of the physical body so much, that it translates back into pure Light.

I believe this process of complete transcendence of the physical, is what happened with Yeshua and how the image of the Shroud of Turin came to be formed.     He "unlocked" the condensed Light within that which appears to be matter.   This caused some kind of energy radiation phenomena to happen.

So, he's not limited or confined by a human brain anymore, though it would appear to us that he is still using a body, one we could touch, see, etc. if he allowed it.   Complete and full access to the Universal Mind, and all that it contains.

I believe we can do this too.   Meanwhile, the human brain for a person still stuck in physicality, seems to be limited in its capacity, until that zenith point is reached.

As far as the afterlife and memory and how all that works, it seems that memory is information and we become more purely aware of information and of being information in the afterlife, so the only constraints we have are according to our beliefs and to our rate of vibration.  The faster the vibration, the more all inclusive the consciousness.

Hi, Guys nice replies by all of you.

My view is that we retain only the memories of our personal identity within the moment we exist in the afterlife. All the other billions and billions of ever-changing "NOW’s” are stored within the Divine Mind keeping each moment in context. So if we meet another being we are immediately supplied with all the relevant knowledge to interact fully.

I
would like to make it clear that although during my node I felt I was God or at least some mighty omni-being, when returning to myself I realized that I was not God but had somehow viewed all existence through his mighty figurative eyes.

The feeling was of extreme euphoric wonder and infinite power to create, destroy and know everything.

The moment lasted eternity and yet an immeasurably small moment both at the same "Time
Very difficult to relate in the material realm of our earthly existence

I am posting this from memory.  We have discussed the postmortem memory issue in detail in connection with another topic.  Most of us would gladly reassure our loved ones in the most unequivocal way possible that we were stilll alive after death.  About 50% of Americans report ADCs within the first year of their loved one's passing, but truly impressive ADCs are relatively rare.  Why is this?  One of many possible answers is our loss of memory.  OBE adept, Robert Bruce, reports that during his contacts with spirits visiting an astral hospital, almost none of them seem to have memories of their place of origin.  Swedenborg claims to have learned that spirits lose access to their earthly memories and are only occasionally allowed to retrieve them at God's discretion.  Yet others like Albert claim no such memory impairment in spirit contacts.

What are we to make of this disparity?  Memory impairment makes the most sense to me as the best explanation of why impressive ADC contact is so relatively unconmon.  And Swedenborg has by far the best verifications for his astral travels.  But just how good is memory suppression or loss as an explanation for the rarity of truly impressive ADCs?  I am still mulling over this question.

Don,

Plato said when we die we have to cross the river of forgetfulness, but this does not accord with my nde as I knew who I was over there. You state OBE adept "Robert Bruce" don’t you mean Robert Monroe, yes he was visiting an astral hospital of traumatized souls so there would very likely have had loss of memory.

Note! that the disparity exists only between those who have not really died and all near death experiences know who they are during this phenomenon. However, I concede no one that has really been dead for a protracted time, say one year has come back and been able to relate to about  loss of memory.

Now if we lose our identity or self-awareness in the afterlife, we have died in some way and that self has ceased to exist. Without memory, a soul would be an empty mind.

The jury so to speak is out on this topic

Alan,

No, I do mean Robert Bruce.   He has written a few books on OBEs.  If you have not done so, you might consult his website: astraldynamics.com.  I find him more close-minded than either Bruce Moen or Robert Monroe.  Still, Robert Bruce has many unique insights and I encourage you to read the articles posted on his site.

The spirit hospital's visitors to whom Robert Bruce refers are not the "confused patients," but rather their loved ones who are apparently visiting family members who have just died.  These "hospitals" seem similar to those reported by Bruce Moen and Robert Monroe, though it seems doubtful that Robert Bruce would locate them in a plane like Focus 27.  This difference is both fascinating and frustrating.  Let me know what you think of RB's site.
