a suggestion regarding topics on the forum

I would just like to note that it is very exciting to find all this energy on the forum in the last couple of days.

Would it be courteous of us to consider allowing some of the other topics on the board to remain a little longer, and create some space for new ones by newbies?

I notice here so many topics begun by only a couple of members, causing others to disappear into the "past" very quickly.

I don't mention this to criticize anyone because I enjoy reading all of our thoughts here. But, I think it is something to keep in mind, to be fair to all.

In addition, it is helpful, I think, to have a little longer to reasonably explore good topics. When they proliferate so quickly, it is a little overwhelming, at least to little 'ole me.

Once topics get pushed to the 2nd page they instantly become "old news". I doubt anyone really checks out anything older than the 1st page! Anyone got any suggestions?

Yes, it would be good to hear any ideas from anyone here...

Other than creating artificial limits on numbers of topics allowed per day or week, or deliberately moving topics around, I'm not sure what might be suggested, but perhaps other forums run into this kind of situation occasionally.

I imagine that we are all capable of noticing what is happening, so perhaps it is just a good idea to have some kind of reminder occasionally, and for each of us to self-monitor ourselves. That's one option.

Personally, I click on Page 2.

Sometimes, when I feel very daring and want a special secret thrill, I click on Page 3.

Works for me just fine. Maybe next year I'll get all hot and bothered and go as far as Page 4, assuming that my nerves can stand it.

There are forums that offer a catalog of topics to which ne can refer, but the catalog takes up so darn much space that it limits space for anything else. Of course if the catalog were in the margins, where we usually have ads for Viagra and Crazy Glue (honi soit qui mal y pense!), and in smaller type to give topic headings only, it might be useful. Still, there's not much to be gained over clicking on Page 3 (Whew! - the very idea almost makes my hair stand on end).

This is just another view, but I think it would be quite good if we could low it down a little all right. It seems to me that he really insightful threads seem to arise when we all have time to reflect and for intuition and insight to develop.

One way might be for the regulars to observe some sort of queue - agree a very approximate target max number of live threads at a given time....

Happy to go with the flow though.....

I often begin at page 92 and work backwards. I enjoy digging up B-man's ancient threads and annoying him by commenting on them as if he posted them yesterday. Such mind games used to keep him more interested in the site, if only to attack some of my threads. Of course, I hope (in vain) that no one else will notice this dredge operation. In the good old days, I could reply to old threads and then erase my post. That way, the thread would just appear like a ghost with no updated posts! This inspired profound new threads on poltergeists, etc. Ah, for the good old days when inferior technology made the site more fun!

I for one, don't want them to feel uncomfortable about having a lot to share. Bless them, for taking the time. If an older post is interesting, somebody could simply bring it up again and write "Bump."

Thanks for the post, Blink.

I too like the times that topics stay up and people have time to mull over the answers. It is difficult for those of us who have been here a while to get excited about something that has been posted on in the past, but I guess it is inevitable that that happen.

I wish there were a way I could flag the topics I want to return to when I am logged in so I could find them more easily when I return, just as I flag messages in my email inbox. Am I missing something? Is there already a way to do this?

OK here's what I figured out so far.

If you are logged in, if you are on the page for a topic (not the index page) there is at the top list of buttons, a button called

Add to Favorites

And if you click on that button, a gold star is added next to the topic title.

So I guess the flag here is a gold star.

Also, at the top under the Date and Time line, there are buttons to go to different places on the site. And one of these buttons is

My Favorites

And if you choose that, the board will give you an index of your favorites.

Now why did it take me several years to figure that out!!!

Thanks for all your replies, guys, and thanks, Lucy, for the tips on favorites.

Maybe I will go back to page 92 also...just for laughs! There are certainly some interesting times there.

Do you think that in the afterlife I will view them all at once, in one giant mind-feed?

Something to contemplate: all of you in my brain, simultaneously, in the next life....

A couple suggestions-

Instead of a person posting a flurry of posts within a short time of each other, combine some of them esp when they contain similar thoughts.

Also, posts that are political in nature should be placed in Off Topic forum, if not by the poster then by the moderator.

Finally, just use a little bit of courtesy (and common sense) by recognizing that when a poster essentially takes over the forum, he or she ends up pushing other posts off the page and consequently, most of the time, into oblivion.
