The most important thing is that EXPERIMENTALLY it has also been shown to be true. For example, in particle accelerators, no matter how long you try to accelerate a given particle, it will never reach the speed of light. It turns out that no matter how hard we try, we can only ever get things to something like 99.9999% the speed of light.
