Hello Everyone, I'm New
Jul 23rd, 2007 at 2:12am

I recently found this board and decided to join it. I've become very interested in some of the ideas being presented on this forum.

I was raised as a fundamental baptist and I've been struggling to overcome this indoctrination as I've gotten older (I'm 18). The only thing I care about is the truth, and I've tried to open my mind to whatever the truth happens to be. I stopped believing in God two years ago because the traditional Christian beliefs just didn't hold up with the many questions I had about the world. I discussed these questions with many pastors and people of faith, however I have always been brought back to the conclusion that the Christian God does not exist.

I lived with terrible depression as a Christian. I was very discouraged by the amount of people who would burn in hell in this world. As a kid, I was burdened with the constant images  of my friends and family burning in an eternal state of suffering in Hell. For a while I had a much better & optimistic outlook on life without the belief in a god. At least if there is no God, there is no Hell in which billions of people will spend eternity for simply believing the wrong thing.

Even without this belief, I feel as if there isn't much reason to live. I would love to know the 'truth" more then anything. I don't care about hope or happiness. The only thing that matters to me is what is true. If there is no existence after this life I would greatly accept it, however I'm not sure if I would continue living such a meaningless life.

Most of you seem to believe that there is some kind of existence after death. Why do you believe this and how do you know it is true? Could you please recommend me something I could read that would help me understand this? Do many people on this board have conflicting views on this subject?

Also, many people on this site seem to believe in a god of some kind. I'd be interested to hear why these people believe in a god, and what evidence they have for his existence.

I hope to learn a lot from this site, and I hope that I can be helpful and contribute what I can to the people here. Thanks a lot.

hi, nice to meet ya.  i was also raised baptist and became a non-believer when i got older for the same reasons.  most religious people aren't really digging hard to find the scientific truth of things..  i mean they don't even believe in evolution, which scientists consider about as true as gravity!

i'm convinced reincarnation is real, not because of any special religious feeling, but because the evidence is so obvious.   there's a lot of books on this, but here's ones that blew me away ....

return from heaven by carol bowman
journey of souls and destiny of souls by michael newton ph.d
many lives, many masters by brian weiss
the afterlife experiments by gary e. schwartz (researcher tested the abilities of talented psychics to "read" people in a lab)

for physical proof, you can search ian stevenson.  he's a respected researcher who has documented a ton of cases of reincarnation and the corresponding birthmarks, etc.

some books like this are more "out there" than others, but i've read every book i could get my hands on, and what's really surprising is how many hypnotists came to the same truths and same kind of stories, separate from each other.  i've read more than one book by hypnotists who accidentally hypnotized someone into a past life - kind of discredits the idea that the hypnotist is leading them!   (many lives, many masters is one such book)

and just for the record, sylvia browne is a fraud.

and God is an idea that goes along with this, but this "God" is very different from the Christian idea of God.  the best theory i have of what/who God is is that God is "everything," and we are all pieces of God and are God ourselves (and reincarnation is the journey to become more pure and "Godlike").    so you couldn't really attach a personality or gender to God, except that God is considered all-loving.  obviously reincarnation does away with the idea of hell too.  hell is a pretty funny idea when you think about it - "anyone who doesn't live like i want them to is going to hell!  because i think homos are gross!"   like telling children that santa isn't going to give them presents if they're bad, the church tells girls they're going to hell if they have sex, etc.  to get them to behave the way they want.

also the implications of reincarnation on how to live your life are very different from Christianity, because Christianity doesn't teach reincarnation and truly sowing what you reap.  the goal of reincarnation isn't punishment, but learning from all perspectives, so for example if you killed someone, you might choose to come back and be killed in your next life, to learn the consequences of your actions.  the implications are incredible when you consider that holocaust victims actually chose to die that way and had a purpose in doing so.

Christianity teaches that God basically has his way with you - he creates you, chooses what happens to you and how you die.  reincarnation teaches that YOU choose all this - putting a lot of personal responsibility on to people..  you can't just say "the devil made me do it."

also environmentally, a lot of Christians think it's OK to trash the planet because they think Jesus is coming back soon anyway.  obviously if you have to live a later life on the planet, you might care a bit more about preserving it.

While reading about the experiences and opinions of others might be of some value I find that direct experience is probably the only thing that should be allowed to changes one's beliefs.  As you have no doubt discovered when it comes to our existence beyond physical death there are many, differing opinions.  Some of these opinions are based on direct experiences of exploring our afterlife and then coming to your own conclusions.  Most of these opinions are not based on any direct experience of the opinion holder, but rather, on the opinion holder's reading of someone else's opinion, most often also lacking any direct experience.

So, what is one to do if they want to know more than the conflicting opinions of others.  My vote goes for directly experiencing, exploring and gathering evidence of the existence of our afterlife.  How??  If you wanted to know how many teeth in a horse's mouth what would do?  To really KNOW I am the kind of guy who would go find some horses, look in each one's mouth and count teeth.  Conceptually, KNOWING about our afterlife is just as simple.

Step 1 - Find a way to contact and communicate with a person known to be dead.
Step 2 - Gather information from the dead person you have absolutely no way of knowing except by this contact and communication.
Step 3 - Verify and validate the accuracy of the information.
Step 4 - If the information is verified, you have evidence that dead person still exists, somewhere.
Step 5 - Repeat the above steps until you come to a conclusion based on your own, direct experience.

This much easier than most opinion-holders realize.  Sadly, too many of them are satisfied with arguing of the conflicting opinions of the many sources they have read without ever looking in the horse's mouth and counting teeth.  Wink

Hello and welcome Mental Eclipse:

I understand what you mean about fundamentalist Christianity. I too, found it hard to believe in things such as a vengeful, wrathful, homophobic and jealous God; eternal damnation; and that whole satan business.

For years I thought I was free of such ideas, but eventually my spiritual development reached a point where I found that I still had some fragments of mind that caused me to worry about fundamentalist viewpoints.  I kept them suppressed for a while.  This both surprised and troubled me. At times, such as going for a walk, I'd tell God (I didn't hear him answer me), "You're divine plan means everything to me, but I can't believe that there is some truth to Christ, simply because a book says so. It would be dishonest for me to act as if I did.

Eventually I started to have experiences which told me that Christ does play a key role in the divine plan. But not in a dictator like fundamentalist way. Certainly God, Christ and all of the other beings of love and light that exist are way too wise and loving to be something akin to cosmic dictators.

That said, I agree with Bruce. People have lots of opinions. It is best to find out for yourself what it is true. As long as you have good intentions, you should be okay.

Hi there,

I just want to say that I'm sorry you're going through such a rough time right now.   The death of my Father is what prompted me to explore information on the afterlife, not any conflict in my religious beliefs, but I know exactly how you feel about needing answers.

Good luck in your search.  Smiley  The Seeker suggested some great books, a few of them I've already read and I think you should look into them.

welcome mental Eclipse, you said: Also, many people on this site seem to believe in a god of some kind. I'd be interested to hear why these people believe in a god, and what evidence they have for his existence.
_____

for me god is All that Is. that means my breath and whenever I get a good feeling, to me that is life, and its good.
I sometimes get guidance in my head which comes in the form of feelings and voice.
when I was your age, driving along one day a voice said god is not a man as the image your hold right now. I started crying right then and there, that god was not as I thought.
so then the journey truly begins for you. you have broken free of the traditional restraints already for your own journey. at the same time that I was upset that I had no god to lean on, I was feeling free from the former ideas that I stood on my own two feet here, and I would have to do a lot of study into who we were, why we were here, but why we are here is deeply personal. At your age there were a lot of times it was meaningless.
yet keep studying, but most important to get the experiences on your own by pressing on and having faith in yourself to get the answers which lead to peace of mind.
you're quite young, but already you are asking the right questions, so I have faith in you to find them.
Love is god to me now. love undistorted by belief systems that distort love.
in the bible whereever you might see god as love supported, then I would say thats true. you can start here if you wish by clicking on resources and free articles at the top of this page. theres tons of resources to lead you into the journey of who you are, and we are here and welcome you, and all religions and faiths and atheists too are welcome, we are all in life together.

and it is a lot easier to contact a deceased person than you think as Bruce said.
you might try asking for a guide to come to you and help you along your way, this worked for me also. persistance is the key. love to you, I know you will get what you need. alysia

Greetings Eclipse,

Welcome!

Our host at this site Bruce Moen is too modest to 'toot his own horn.'  Wink
His books are what brought this site into being, and they are what bring many of us to the understandings we have about the Afterlife. They--- particularly "The AfterlifeKnowledge Guidebook" (or with CDs known as "The Home Study Course"), are the quickest, most efficiently organized, most loving way of finding your way there. No one else has laid out a plan so concisely.

Whoever you read will speak to you more or less, depending on how much you are in tune with their personality. The people who post here will give you a great overview of the varieties of experiences and personalities that look into this type of information.
But Bruce's Guidebook lays it all out in steps that will take you there most directly.

May you have much success in your explorations! I started reading Moen's works about two years ago, dragging along as much fear and confusion as I could stand. It all got cleared up ---These goood people and Bruce's Guidebook completely changed my life, for which I am most grateful, so I hope you too will find the answers you seek!

Bets
