Hi Seeker- The basic idea with meditation is to obtain complete access to the operations of your mind. This begins with turning off the internal babble. As you breathe in and out, you might count, or you might prefer a more traditional syllable like Hing (in) and Sah (out). The point is to continue doing only this, nothing else. Eventually things will start to come into focus and the inner babble with end, thoughts will sort of drift away on their own, and you will find quietness.
There are a lot of excellent books on meditation - Patanjali' Yoga Sutras and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika are two classics, then there are a large number of guide books from Tibet. You might find those that deal with Dzogchen most useful, since there's very little formal stuff. The Dalai Lama wote one of these. The only problem is that Tibetan books are usually associated with a well developed philosophical tradition, which might be more easily handled by getting some of the very basic translations in which these are described.
