Neil Peart and Freewill
May 4th, 2007 at 6:02pm

I was listening to Freewill (a song by the band Rush) the other day and couldn't help but notice how certain stanzas parallel themes similar to those related to this particular theory of life and/or the after-life. Most Rush fans will tell you that Neil Peart (published author, drummer and lyricist of Rush) has a fairly well-rounded intellect, lives to learn, and is agnostic; therefore, it is highly probable that he consumed a few books, at some point in his life, related to those theories we echo here. What surprised me, however, was the mention of guides ("You can choose a ready guide, In some celestial voice"), the mention of what I interpret to be the idea that we can be trapped in a hell or heaven of our own making ("You can choose from phantom fears, And kindness that can kill"), and finally something that sounds like a description of the purple "disc" thing with "probes" ("A planet of playthings, We dance on the strings, Of powers we cannot perceive"). It goes without saying, of course, that these little selections of lyrics could mean many different things to many different people.

I do hope there are Rush fans here. It might make this topic a bit more interesting. Smiley

Your post may get Rush some more fans! I just goggled for more lyrics and find I'm very much in tune with them. Will look for music tomorrow.

Thank you for the lead!
