Most people report that at the moment of death all pain vanishes. As one example, my Dad (1978) told me, "Tell your Mother that I feel better than I ever felt in my life. Pun intended." - I did as requested and was promptly labeled as being bonkers.
However, reports from suicides often involve being alone as they wander through a lonely space. Others who have done things that they recognize as hurtful to their companions often put themselves into whatever place they feel is appropriate for themselves. The purpose is not to suffer, but to repair their attitudes in such a way that they will not repeat their prior actions. Were very hard on ourselves. The tendency to be reborn into a world in which we suffer is far more potent, and seems to arise from the same desire to prevent ourselves from making further errors.
For the lower astral and stuck souls, the afterlife is simply a phase between mundane lives. For those who are more developed the core motivation for this is the reocgnition of God's inifinite love and compassion, in the face of which many people feel really terrible about what they have done. Thus, to answer directly, there seems to be no pain imposed, but many people seem to seek pain, and by clinging to their past errors, they often reincarnate into added pain.
