I'm watching this special on chimps, and they just showed something that struck a cord. Now, the whole episode has been on evolution and such, and slowly it was wearing away on my spiritual side (I know, they can coexist, but that never really worked out in my head before).
Well, they showed this chimp coming across a waterfall. Every chimp, be it a group or just one of them, instantly started a ritual upon coming across this waterfall. They would grab onto branches and, pretty much, freak out. They swung around on vines running across the rocks by the waterfall, making a noise that sounded almost like singing.
Each one did the same exact thing, it was... odd to watch. After a few minutes of dancing, they simply walked away quietly. It was, like... a spiritual release.
Which got me thinking, if chimps worship water, the same way it has been worshiped by humans for ages, then there is obviously something to this spiritual thing.
For the longest time, something I would always get caught up on is this 'Oh, I'm just believing because I don't want to accept the alternative, which would be oblivion.'
Are chimps self aware? Do they bother themselves with god, or death? No. They are like us, at 8. Happy with what is.
So what makes them, without fail, perform this 'dance' to the sound of the waterfall?
Is spirituality, completely natural?
