Other people don't see them.
Consider things this way. You go to a major league baseball game. You sit in the upper deck. You look at the batter through a pair of binoculars. The image you see isn't the batter himself, just a visual copy that you're binoculars made.
Perhaps this is how it is when we perceive things in the physical. We don't perceive what we perceive directly. We perceive the image our mind has created.
So somehow my mind allows me to see what is physical and non-physical at the same time.
I've received messages from my guidance that spirits don't actually see the physical me when they make contact with me. They see my connecton to the light when my kundalini is at my crown chakra.
I had this experience a while ago before I realized that spirits were seeing my connection to the light. I was meditating one day. I was in a bliss state. I saw a life size woman walk right up to me. I could see her with perfect clarity. I looked at her face and saw every detail. I expected her to look at me after she walked up to me, but she didn't see me at all and instead pointed up to the sky above and behind me with a look of astonishment. She let other people know about what she saw. It felt like her and these people were in some spirit realm. I had no idea what this was about at the time. It wasn't until later on when my guidance let me know that stuck spirits see my connection to spirit when my kundalini is at my crown, that I knew what this meant.
Regarding the reflection issue, my belief is that a spirit sent just a small part of itself to where I was when I saw this. Similar to when I saw the really big star flash that I believe came from Jesus. I don't believe that all of Jesus appeared. Just a small part of him.
Related to this, do you remember what Bruce Moen wrote about his first meeting with Robert Monroe after Robert Monroe passed away? Robert Monroe told him that he was speaking to several people at the same time.
When it comes to how spirits manifest in the physical, I don't know if how they do so can be determined by considering how physical space exists in a linear manner. It has more to do with energy levels and focus of attention. I've had out of body experiences where I experienced myself in the place I projected to and in my physical body at the same time.

It seems it's not just another layer over the physical, it's somehow involved in the physical, because you mentioned this interesting detail, that once an orb of light was reflected by glass; there are different explanations thinkable, one is that it was physical light (in this case it should have been visible to others too), another it was a different type of radiation, that only you and/or other sensitive persons can see, but following to some degree the physical laws, and third, this orb simulated an interaction with the physical, presenting itself with what seemed to be a reflection.
