I am a member of a spiritual forum online. I was contacted via personal email by a new member. He joined only because he read my post and it had touched him deeply. He immediatly sent me 10 emails and included his number. I had only known him for a half an hour and I didn't reveal much about myself. In the last email of the day (email # 10) he claimed that he was falling in love with me more every minute. I found this strange, but I was curious so I kept in contact with him. He felt that he knew me from another life and that his spirit guides may have led him to the forum to find me. Throughout the past week we had been emailing each other back and forth everyday. He was actually quite intelligent and he was very knowledgable on spiritual matters so I enjoyed his messages. He thought sex was a "waste of time" and he devoted his whole life to "meditatation" and "godliness". He told me that he wanted to become an "Immortal" or a "Descended Master". It sounded to me like he wanted to become like jesus (ie walk on water, preform miracles).  In his emails he would often express affection (hugs and kisses). This morning he sent me an email that said he needed to terminate his email account because he "was being called to spend more time in meditation" and being "godly" and less time "chatting and writing to me". He said I am free to call him if I wanted to speak to him about becoming an "Immortal" but he would not call me because he has to "call to god". I felt rejected in a weird sort of way; as if he thought that I wasn't ''holly" enough to chat with (this could be just my perception). I try to be a good person and live  life as spiritually as possible (if that makes sense);however, I still try to balance this in between enjoying life and living in the moment as best as I can. In your opinion, is it possible for a person to go too far and get carried away with thier spiritual persuits? If one begins to isolate themselves from human contact and avoids leisure activities or intimate relationships with others could this be a sign of dicipline and devotion to ones belief in god; or could this be the behavior of a fanatic who takes things to the extreme? I do not want to come across as judgemental; but can one take their spiritual beliefes too far so that it reaches the point of an obsession? Is it better to have a balance? Where do we draw the line?

IMHO YES.  I feel life is for living and learning, not becoming a reclusive and shutting out the rest of life. This does sound like obsession to me  I think you've already drawn the line. We each know when to draw it.

baby_duck,

Actually none of us really knows the whole story concerning what the other guy is trying to work out in their current life but for some reason you two met (I believe there are no accidents) and he's given you the challenge of trying to figure out if you're on the wrong track and he's got the truth.  These are the kind of individuals who really make us work because they create self doubt.  Undecided Lips Sealed They are our greatest teachers.  Wink  And if we're smart, we use them to spur us on to inquire just as you have done or get a little more insight into our own issues or to get to know someone else for the purpose of learning not to judge. Some individuals are at the point where they need to be "Fanatics" before achieving balance.

Meanwhile, since we each are at different levels of growth and are unique yet the same, we need to look at these meetings and use them as indicators of where we've been, what issues we're working on, or which ones we've mastered so as to help, through compassion, the next guy.  Maybe this guy needed to have someone to tell that he is no longer a hacke'n around guy like most of us, or maybe you're unsure if you're on the right track, either way it's a Win/Win situation merely by having the courage to make contact with another individual.  And the real beauty of this type of intereaction is that you can easily walk away with the thought, "that was an interesting interlude" then let it go.

Hope this ramble helps as it sure aids me in internalizing these thoughts.  Love, Jean Kiss

Jean:

Yes, you are very right! I enjoyed the experience of knowing him; if only for a short while. I did question wether or not I was on the right path. He taught me many vauble things and I am more knowledgable as a result of having contact with him. I am sorry, it was not proper of me to possibly label him as a "fanatic". I do not know his path and I respect his choice to dedicate his life to spirituality. I may not be capable of making the same commitment but in a sense I admire his dedication; although I may not understand it. It is true this encounter challenged me to think and reflect; so it was a win-win situation...a learning experience. I was inspired to dedicate a bigger piece of myself to spirituality. Perhaps I may have even inspired him in some way. Since I have started becoming aware of my thought processes I have realized that it can be so easy to make a judgement without intending to do so.

I am really into qoutes lately , so here are some appropriate ones that fit this lesson:

"Everyone brings happiness into your life... some by coming, others by leaving"~unkown

"Don’t cry because it’s over now, laugh because it happened"~unkown

"The most difficult lesson to learn is: Which bridge in life to use or which one to burn"... ~unkown

"There comes that mysterious meeting in life
when someone acknowledges who we are and what we can be,
igniting the circuits of our highest potential"~Rusty Berkus

"Bless those who challenge us to grow, to stretch, to move beyond the knowable, to come back home to our elemental and essential nature. Bless those who challenge us for they remind us of doors we have closed and doors we have yet to open"...~Navajo saying

"Everyone and everything around you is your teacher"…~Ken Keys Jr.

"Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding about ourselves"...~Carl Jung

And my personal favorite.....

"Some people come into our lives and quickly go...
Some people move our souls to dance...They awaken us
to new understanding with the passing whisper of their wisdom...
Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon...
They stay in our lives for awhile, leave footprints in our hearts,
and we are never, ever same"...
~unknown

Marylin: I agree that I have drawn a line, thank you.

Love

baby_duck,

Quotes especially relivant to what we are exploring here IMO are Berkus, Navajo, Keyes, and Jung. ACIM would say "Giving is receiving" Marilyn would say, "We're all one" and Monroe's rote states that, "There are no students, there are no teachers, there is only remembering". So many ways to say we're here to learn from each other and to love one another. Thanks!

Hi Baby Duck,

I believe each person is brought into our life for a reason.  No shared love is ever a loss, only a gain for each one.  So it seems to have been for you both.

I believe that often it isn't a matter of going too far, but rather a matter of not knowing how to proceed. It's great to put a lot of energy into one's spirituality, one just has to know how to direct this energy.

I believe that we physically incarnate so we can use our experience of the physical World to spiritually grow. If we try to push it away, we don't use it to our advantage.

Some spirits end up getting stuck in a false path for a long time.  Just another lesson.

Some spirits get stuck on a false path for a smaller amount of time, and then are free to move on to a better path.

We have all of eternity to evolve.  Perhaps it is a matter of how quickly we want to move on to a really joyfull way of being.

I am new to all this and forgive me if I do indeed sound 'judgemental.'  Reading your post - my first instinct says that you are well rid. I think the pursuit of anything can become the 'false god' when taken to an extreme. I am new to these 'forums' and visit very few - two, three in all. I have enough experience on the net though to know there are some people we are better without. Some very deceptive, manipulative types. A few words on a screen, or even a voice on a phone can make someone seem or sound like something, some one so far removed from the reality of who or what they truly are. It can be very dangerous. We can all leave ourselves open to feeling 'used' through the net - if we choose to or allow that to happen - cyber people in virtual worlds. See it for what it was, learn from it and forget it.

Like I say, I am new to all of this - so forgive my ignorance. What is a 'Descended Master' ?

I think perhaps when people use hi fallutin' terms like these to describe themselves - it says more about their ego than any real spiritual 'evolution'. Whomever or What ever Christ was, or is - when He was referred to as something as seemingly simple as 'good' - he countered it by saying that none are good but God. Wee bitta humility goes a long long way  Smiley

Just my tuppence worth Smiley

Take care.

Thank -you everyone for all of your different views; everyone of you offered me validation and much needed insight. I always like to find out other people's views so I can perhaps learn something new and keep myself in check!

Jgull2a:  This man guided me to a website that offers a description of an "Ascended Master" or an "Immortal". I thought we were allready immortal and we just were not all aware of this. Anyhow, here is the description  the website offers: (www.jhershierra.com)

"Life can be greater than we ever imagined.....

People have been resurrecting and achieving immortality since before the days of Lazarus. These Immortals move among us, some have estates, businesses and bank accounts. They also have their own retreats hidden away from humanity. Immortals have perfect bodies. They can disappear and reappear anywhere on the planet (teleportation). They can communicate telepathically with others, walk on water and through fire, nothing is impossible for them.

Immortals can speak any language and can look old or young depending upon their purpose. They have been written and talked about throughout history. Jesus took this resurrection event one step further and completely transcended life on earth when he made his ascension. He demonstrated what was possible for every human being".

You might want to check out the immortality message board; especially the post entitled "AND THE SIGN SAID ...LONG HAIRED FREAKY PEOPLE NEED NOT APPLY". Jhershierra, the woman behind this website promotes her book and dedicates  an entire section to putting down members and guests she finds "weird or too new-agey". She basically singles out any post that doesn't fit within her belief system;and in turn, pubically humiliates and or attacks the person who doesnt follow her views. After the experience I had with this man and reading the posts on this message board, I was immediatly turned off from exploring this subject much futher.

I've heard that for some, meditation can become like an
addictive drug. Sounds like what we have here is somebody
who thinks he's found "the meaning of it all" but in reality
has turned into a "cosmic foo-foo" who will one day realize he's
just found another way of escape from reality. Oh well. At
least the DEA isn't going to hunt him down for THAT method
of getting high...
