I am very sorry for the sorrow you must be feeling.  There are others on this board who will likely comment extensively on dream appearances.  For my part, I will say that my own father, who passed on June 14, has appeared in dreams of mine in different stages since.   

He "youthed" in the dreams, which I recorded and journaled, to a point now where he appears to be 30-35 years of age. 

This coincided exactly with what Bob Mckelvey told me about the forms that spirits take on in the afterworld...and Bob was right on concerning some other things regarding how my father appeared.

As such, I believe it is more than possible that these were more than "dreams", regarding your friend.
