Leo

Fire – both water and fire have a purification function and it is said that fire carries forward that which water began.  From Leo comes solar power, clearing the way by burning for the expression of the Soul, and it provides the burning-ground which all aspirants must tread eventually with self-effacement and yet will.

The chief keynotes of Leo – sometimes called “the Lion of Assertion” are individuality, self-consciousness and sensitivity, and will, the will to rule and dominate, to illumine and gain knowledge.  These contribute to make this sign a “battle-field of the Forces of Matter and the Forces of Light”.

On the personal level, an intense sense of individuality is apt to make the Leo subject think of themselves dramatically as the centre of his universe, and the will to do and dominate fortifies this tendency.  But the true self-consciousness which it is Leo’s function to bring about, is awareness of the greater, higher Self and realisation in ever-growing measure of co-existence with others, of universality and Purpose as it is linked with the Will of God and not just the self-centred individual.

Despite the energy of will and power which is connected with Leo (it is the sign of rulers and dictators) sensitivity is one of its chief conditioning elements; depending upon the stage of integration and self-consciousness achieved, it may be primarily sensitivity to impacts from the environment, to personal will and desire, or to the influence of the soul and the higher spiritual forces.  Much depends upon the stage of evolution; the potentiality of the Leo self-consciousness, self-assertion and will to dominate, offers dangers and difficulties when expressed on personal levels, but if raised to the levels of the Higher Self and the implementing of the Plan, they can render immense service.

Exoteric ruler : The Sun, transmitting energy and the ray of organisation and directed manifestation.
Esoteric ruler :  The Sun also, therefore strengthening these influences.

Tasks, goals and opportunities:

The opportunities with which Leo confronts humanity and for which it provides the necessary energy are mainly connected with-

Development of the individuality.  This leads from;
Collective to individual consciousness.
The ‘I’ to the Self.
From the individual to the group.

The transmuting of:
The will to dominate others into the will of self-mastery.
Personality sensitivity into soul awareness.
Self-assertion into selfless assumption of true leadership and the sacred trust of
Right rulership.

Leo offers the opportunity for achieving self-rule and consciousness of the true Self.

To be guarded against:
Self-centredness; over-emphasis of personal sensitivity and awareness of the ‘one at the centre’; the dangerous glamours connected with power and self-assertion; wrong use of power.  In general the conflagatory tendencies of Leo make this sign in which strong forces are aboard and high sensitivity prevails.

In the rhythm of the year our task in this month is to raise the lower expression of these tendencies to the higher spiritual planes.
