Working with reports of past lives in regression sessions, the idea of "cocooning" has never arisen in my clinical experience. That neither agrees with nor denies Silvia's statement, but simply suggests that what she perceives was expressed differently to me. (Hold up a coin - it it "heads" or "tails"? It depends on viewpoint.)
What normally happens, according to regression reports, is that the suicide discovers that death merely interrupts the process of growth, and then comes back to finish, starting up again at the place where the prior life was left off.
Some people seem to look at this as a terrble threat of punitive karma, others look at it as a second chance to get it right because God accepts everything we do and still has purely unconditional love for us all, and others have other ideas.
My suggestion: If you care about your friend, pray for him, forgive him for leaving you, and ask him to forgive himself, to allow love to carry him forward, and to have faith that he will get the best possible treatment in the world of spirits, and in the next life here. In addition, there's nothing really to stop you from staying in contact with him.
