I wonder if we understand just what "imaginary friends" are. When children have them, their imaginary friend is very real to them, and they have the same one consistently over time.
Recently with my grown son, who had had an imaginary friend as a pre-schooler, the subject of a second but brief imaginary friend came up. He said, oh, that one wasn't a real imaginary friend, I made that one up to tease my brother....
His comment struck me as very funny at the time, but now I wish I had asked him more about the "real" imaginary friend...
