How do we find our deaths?
Apr 4th, 2006 at 10:33am

Yesterday, not long after the lunch break, a scaffolding fell 13 stories to a Boston street, killing three people.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2006/04/04/death_came_crashing_down/?p...

Two of those killed were construction workers and one was driving by on the street below. Out of the myriad of construction workers there, why did those two perish? Two of those killed were under 30 and had many things to live for in conventional terms. The third was older but was well-loved by family and friends, reason enough to live.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2006/04/04/accident_clai...

One had a small child.
http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2006/04/04/romildo_silva...

One had a great career path many would love to have.
http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2006/04/04/michael_tsan_...

(oh darn you can't get in to more than 2-3 articles at a time. sorry)

"Michael Tsan Ty, 28, a physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital, was driving on Boylston Street wearing his green hospital scrubs when the scaffolding fell and crushed his Honda. The freak accident ended a budding medical career for the award-winning student from Atherton, Calif."

Out of the many cars on the street, and the many near hits, why was Ty the one? (the grandson of a former mayor was also in his car but escaped the damaged car with no injuries).

Why these three? Why now? just the wrong place at the wrong time? (an answer even sometimes uncovered by George Anderson) or some greater picture involved?

So maybe some people would be interested to try retrievals on these people or at least get some answers.

Hi Lucy,
I was struck by the seemingly needless tragedy of that also. I assume tho that your questions are rhetorical, expressions of grief and compassion for them, because we don't really know if they need a retreival. They may have thought 'Well, this is it!' Perhaps enough to get them to the light.
Then if we were to try a visit (don't know what that's called in Moen-ology), when do they find out why they were called then? They might not know for weeks our time and we'd make a pest of ourselves in the meantime. Well anyway, if you don't get any volunteers that could be why.
Best wishes.

Actually I'm pretty fascinated that they were able to find their deaths so ...easily. And I think this kind of thing holds the answer to alot of the questions I've seen run through here lately.

Like, I don't think you can go to this article if you've just been to the others, but the Dr. Ty was in just the "right" place at the "right" time.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2006/04/04/a_fatal_crash...

It says in part:
"Jiminez ... was driving along Boylston Street just after 1 p.m., headed to a restaurant with his wife and son ... when Jiminez saw a small Honda change lanes in front of him.
A split second later, Jiminez saw the Honda crushed by a huge piece of scaffolding that had fallen from an Emerson College building ... . The front of Jiminez's car was hit by falling debris, as well."

So if Dr. Ty hadn't changed lanes perhaps he would still be here.

btw, the hospital where he worked is not the closet to the accident scene.

No we don't know that any of them needs a retrieval. But it does give us an opportunity to discuss things from another angle.

Hey Lucy,

I believe everything in this life happens for a reason, and that may seem like a cop out but even though its hard there always seems to be a bigger picture.

These people who tragically died have affected hundreds of other people through their passing, influenced each one, taught them something even if they do not relise it. For you maybe its given you chances to learn and grow which is what I believe we are here to do.

Also for them maybe they choose this short life or had a specific thing to learn and had completed that? I'm not too into all this so have to pardon my lack of knowledge but it just seems everything happens for a reason, and good somehow can come out of it even if the bad does outway it.

I lost my cousin in a car crash, year below me, he was a person people looked up too, I still can't understand why he had to die, I might not ever but deep down somehow it happened for a reason even if I don't know it yet.

Hope this helps, its what helps me when times are bad, or bad things happen.

Ryan

There is an interesting book available at your local
library or bookstore which has been out for many
years.  It is The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton
Wilder.  I read it many years ago.  Wilder studied
the events leading up to and followiing the bridge's
collapse.  After alot of research, he concluded that
each person met death at a time that was the best
for him or her.

I do feel sad for the people's families esp. the three-yr old son, but I ma more interested in the philosophical issues here.

Seems like lately people ask the same question over and over again, just in different forms. Wonder why. I thought this would be a way to ask the question again, and maybe get a group answer.

Of course, on a lower philosophical level, I can't fathom having things going so well in my life and deciding to leave when the future looks so good. This life/death thing must be very complex.

I didn't read that one of Thornton Wilder's works but it certainly sounds worth the effort. Isn't it interesting that he explored those ideas from a philosophical perspective. I wonder where he got the idea. Does creativity dip into that great reservior of knowledge and find a way to express a truth? Seems like that would be a good companion book to, say, one I read on George Anderson.
