In 1991, I was in New Mexico taking graduate-level literature courses. A friend and I shared an L-shaped dorm room for the duration of the session. My part of the room was in the upright part of the L with a window overlooking the inner courtyard adjacent to my bed.
All in all, it was a wonderful, relaxing time for both of us on many, many levels; therefore, I was truly unprepared for the weird dream I had early one morning.
I could hear the sound of birds breaking the morning stillness when I decided to awake and get up. I opened my eyes and saw, standing next to the bed, an incredible figure.
From the neck down, it appeared to be an American Indian wearing some kind of a loincloth, and barechested. I cannot describe more of the attiire because I was staring with amazement at its head/face.
I did not, at first, feel frightened by what I saw and thought to myself, " Oh, after all it's just a mask." What I was looking at was what appeared to be a mask made of short fur divided by a curving diagonal into two sections: the upper part brown and the lower part white. I could easily discern the texture of the fur--short, hard.
Peering at me steadily from the mask were what seemed to be small, entirely black eyes. As I thought that what I was seeing was a mask, the entity slowly turned its head so that I could clearly see that the neck moved smoothly from neck to fur with no possibility of it being a mask.
This realization caused me to feel real terror. I squeezed my eyes shut, rolled onto my other side, saying, " NO, NO. GO AWAY." With that my friend came in from her section asking me what was wrong because she had heard my cries. Whatever I had seen was completely gone.
