Hyperion,
I'd suggest that you begin with reading step-by-step approaches to the mastery of astral projection. Bruce Moen's latest book, "Afterlife Knowledge Guidebook: A Manual for the Art of Retrieval and Afterlife Exploration" might be as good a place as any to start. It puts in print the exercises of his how-to course and can be purchased with CDs. Bruce does not stress Out-of-Body Experiences (OBEs), but rather Focused Imagination. If you experiment with his techniques, you will quickly sense whether this sort of approach is right for you. If you'd prefer to explore via OBEs, you might try the step-by-step approach of Robert Bruce and Brian Mercer's "Practicing Astral Projection."
If you are not ready for astral exploration, then at least recognize ways your Dad might communicate with you from beyond the grave: e. g. in psychic dreams, an overwhelming sense pf presence, a sense of touch from an unseen hand, characteristic odors (e. g. pipe tobacco or a cologne), or the paranormal movement of objects in such a way that might signal his presence. For example, I had a female student whose Dad recently died. His high school yearbook in her attic had been thrown to the floor by an unseen hand and was open at his picture. No one had ascended to the attic since his death. Remember, almost half of mourners report some sort of contact with their deceased loved one within the first year of his passing.
Beyond this, you might share your questions and your family's prior beliefs (religious or otherwise) about the afterlife on this site, so that posters can respond to your issues in a more relevant way.
Best wishes, Don
