When a pet passes on.
Feb 7th, 2006 at 3:02pm

Recently, on the day after Christmas, my oldest dog, Shanghie of 17 yrs died of natural causes. He was in the process of dieing on Christmas day. So it was a long day and night, till he passed that following morning. He woke up  barking and asking to go out. He did his duties, and fell for a second and then got himslef back up. Several minutes later while on the computer he collasped and passed away. As he passed I paded him talking to him, it was ok to leave, and he was gone. The morning was very difficult, and I had two other dogs to contend with, and they did not yet realize what had happened. I put on some soothing new age music, and just sat there melting away in the flood of memories of our years together. Then the world in which I was in faded away before my very eyes. I think I entered some trance, and the music seems to carry me off to another place. I find myself in a park, with trees in the distance, and a nice carpet of green green grass covering the land. I see many dogs running over a small hill towards me. Many of them 50 or more, just to many to count, all sizes, all shapes. I am amazed at the quantity, and the speed as they ran towards me. As they got close to me, I think up, up, and I gently moved up, just out of reach, out of their way. I wondered if Shanghie was in there somewhere, but did not find him. As the dogs ran under and pass me I turned to see a man in a white robe, long wavy blond hair. welcoming all the dogs around him. I wondered who he was, and I move to all sides of him to get a better look, but with all the constant activity it was hard to stay in one place. I again try to find Shanghie, but no luck, and wondered who this man is. Caretaker of sorts for animals. Reminded me somewhat of pictures of Jesus, but do not want to jump to any conclusions that may be wrong. Anyway I got the feeling Shanghie ended up in this park, and this is why I was brought there. It gave me great peace of mind, and heart to have this happen, and experience.

To me, losing a pet is harder than losing a human friend.  You think they probably understand how much you love them, and other stuff, but you never really know.  With a human friend, especially an adult, you know they mostly understand risk and mortality, and making peace and so on. But not animals - they seem to understand things, but one can't always tell.

The experience you had was quite a gift.  Perhaps your guides or some other helpful entity showed that to you to help you out.  Maybe it was the Grandfather you saw.  What a great feeling it must have been.  I know the feeling - kind of a glimpse of eternity.  Very comforting and very cool.  I have come to believe that higher animals with consciousness nearly self-aware/human level have helpers too, so they don't get stuck with the same problems we do.  Maybe he was one of those - a caretaker as you call him?  I think they also have something to do with assure the loved ones left behind that things are okay.  Hard to say, but thanks for relating your experience, and sorry for your loss.

Dear Doug,

I know how hard it is to lose a pet and I know what your pugs mean to you. Remember that Shanghie  will probably visit you as you gave him such a loving home/family. I feel and see (with my third eye) my beloved collie Teddy with me at times.

I agree with Bud that sometimes it's harder to lose a pet than a human friend. You've had total pure unconditional love from Shanghie. As you know, he's not far from you.

I've been wondering lately just who the caretaker of dogs/animals is in the afterlife.

Much Love,
Mairlyn Wink

Thanks for all your wonderful responces. I knew the day would come, just didn't know when. I asked mother nature, higher entities, ect, to take him when I was home , not while I was at work, or out doing errands. This was granted, and knew someone as listening. Funny a couple of days before I was visited by some nonphysical person, but had no idea who it was. A shadow figure in the window, and the dogs responded to it. I had a feeling the time was getting close for Shanghie to go.  One more thing, I had another dog that died a couple of years ago, but with this one, no contact, no vision, just nothing. I have no idea if she got anywhere. She is still  on my mind where she could be. When I meditate on her, or do dream work, all I get is a blackness of a void. Her name is Pebbles, another black pug. She also died of old age. Yes I have a Pug household.

I too have a experience at lease 3 times now, while on the web.I heard my cat who died last year.He had a cry like no other cat.We were very close. He would come in my bedrome and jump up on the bed and come over to me.I would cuddle him. When he got sick and could not jump on the bed,I would lift him up and cuddle him.He was so weak. When he died,I cryed so much. Now I have heard his cry about 3 times,as if he was next to me waiting for me to pat him.when you lose a pet,it like losing a brother.Love George

Doug, please don't worry as I know you'll make contact with Shanghie. Don't let your grief hold her back although I don't know if this happens with pets or not.

You are very in-tune with things.  Around our place we have great horned owls who announce departures or arrivals, however you look at it.  While it's not a 100% correlation, it's uncanny how coincidental the racket the owls make is to the passing of one of our pets.  Generally our pets are quite old as well, but one time we had a very beloved dog die suddenly and extremely traumatically at 11.5 years old of toxic shock from a bacteria.  The owls didn't hoot at all for 3 days after his death, then started at midday (which had never happened before) and carried on for a couple days at unusual times.   So, that leads me to my guess at your second observation, below.

Now this is just my very humble opinion and just a theory, but I believe that it may be just like with humans: the circumstances of the animal's death and their awareness of self and of you might have some bearing on how they proceed in their afterlife journey.  I think many animals never really separate from the "pool" of "we" and individualize as a distinct "I", so when they depart, they're mostly back in the pool with all the other spirit stuff of animals.  Maybe they are still separate spirits, but they don't see themselves that way so they might have a different journey without the same signs.  I think it's the rare animal that is self aware, but spirits apparently evolve, so I don't think it's out of the question.  The other side of that equation is that one's state of mind at death perhaps leaves one more open to such things than at other times, all other things like attachment being equal.  It's really a two-way street that involves both of you at the time of the death.  If indeed it's like humans, after a year or so, the chance of contact or signs is less, for whatever reason.  Pebbles could well have "left the building" immediately and gone off as a puppy somewhere else to make a little kid happy.  Who knows the many missions a loyal Pug could be sent on?

Wow I never thought of that at all.... reincarnation, It all makes sense. If Pebbles has moved on to a different place, a new life she wouldn't show up on the radar so speak, and be out of range.

Thanks Bud_S...... A nice perspective indeed.

Hi there,

I am sorry about the loss of your dog, but the vision experience you had was wonderful, which I believe you had for a reason.  At least it was for comfort to know that our pets live on.  The most  important thing is that this brought you peace of mind.  I am a huge animal lover and have lost several pets in my life.  Just recently one of our mice died and I used this as an opportunity to talk to my kids about death and the afterlife and such.

On a lighter note, may I point out that your story made me laugh...I am a very nice person so please don't take this wrong, but know that I have a good sense of humor.

As a slight variation from this topic I am also convinced that our pets can miss someone who dies.

When my wife died over two years ago I brought her things and nightclothes home and laid them on our bed. Later I went upstairs with my daughter-in-law to sort them out only to find our seal point Siamese cat lying on her nightdress, the one she was wearing when she died. As my daughter-in-law went to gently move him off my wife`s nightdress he snarled and lashed out at her with his claws - something he had never done before as he is such a gentle cat.
We left him there to rest for a while and later he was quite happy to be moved. I am sure he knew my wife had died and possibly this was his way of saying goodbye to her. He was her cat.

Nice to hear from people who realize pets, animals of this planet are so much like us, connected in so many ways, and go through the same cycles of life we all live. From emotions, to bonding, ect......When we live in harmanoy with our enviorment, animals, plants, life in all its forms, our own life feels to be so much more fullfilled.
