This question has to do with what Dave on this board called "the primacy of matter." We assume that the electrochemical reactions in our brain create consciousness. That if we could duplicate the neural connections, we could create a consciousness. That matter comes first, and consciousness is just a trick of evolution. That is the primacy of matter. This all came about over the past three hundred years due to the progress of science. As we define matter, chemical compounds, etc., we try to understand all of the interactions in this reality. We break things down into billiard ball like building blocks, perform experiments and then write our scientific laws. We begin to factor consciousness out of the equation.
So far, there has been no reproducible scientific proof that consciousness exists on its own, so it is discounted. Although you will see some proof on this site, through books, etc., the proof has never been that of a reproducible experiment as of yet that all of humanity has acknowledged. Thus, living, and life lose much, starting with the notion of consciousness, god and spirituality.
But what if consciousness comes first (the old chicken and egg question)? If consciousness exists on a different plane it may express itself in various ways in our reality. The brain may be more of a receiver for consciousness. Thus we see that there are reports of people having out of body experiences and noticing a silver cord connecting their soul/mind/awareness to their bodies. This can not be seen on any MRI test or CAT scan, and so for now, to science it is just a hallucination - and does not exist.
For me, some of the strongest evidence that our consciousness is independent of our reality has to do with our ability to manipulate the physical world by just focusing our intent. I have researched this and am performing my own explorations with impressive results.
For now, each of us on this board has to obtain our own experiences to prove that there indeed is a soul or spirit of consciousness. As we collect our experiences, we each feel a deep validation of what we know. By sharing them on this board, we support each other too.
Welcome,
Matthew
