Music and the Spiritual
Oct 24th, 2005 at 1:18pm

Just a thought i've been thinking about lately.

One of my favorite things in this life of mine is music. Especially when it's pure and emotional, not the edited, mass produced crap that is the 'big business' of the music industry. But thats a whole other topic within itself, don't get me started. :p

Anyway, Musicial notes are simply vibrations, alot of people say that our souls are on a diffrent vibrational level than our physical (higher). Do you think music could be, in a sense, a possible way to communicate, so to speak, with things of higher vibrations?

I often become emursed(sp?) into the music i am listening to ( or sometimes playing), and at times can be quite overwhelming and powerful if it resonates just right within me. Kind of like a nirvana type experience. This could explian maybe why some people are drawn to certain types of music, and others are not. Perhaps a 'matching' of vibrations? Alot of people will say music can be very spiritual in nature, i tend to agree. Although some of these people may like drugs a bit to much. :p

I was just pondering about this idea, i didn't know if anyone else here would like to comment or expand on anything?

I've always found it interesting that vibrations are the roots of 'hearing' and 'seeing'. (light and sound vibrations). I figure why would the spiritual be any diffrent? without vibrations life would suck.

I agree, music is very affecting and when it harmonizes with our energy field, since everything we percieve is vibration of energy, then when it harmonizes or strengthens our energy it often gives us a "boost"

I've always intensely loved music, and i love to sing...  My Dad and bro are musicians, and maybe one day i'll pick up the guitar.

You're right, what we call the spiritual is simply frequency differences..

I've heard the only difference betweem physical vibration and what we call spiritual forces, is both the rate of vibration and the polarity or charge of energy...

Material/physicality is made up of very condensed, and slowly vibrating energy which contains positive and negative forces.

Spiritual energies, like Love and the "higher" planes nearing Source are very fast in vibration, and purely postively charged...

Positive=active/ever expanding energy, negative=passive/contracting/which attracts positive force...

Negative is only really a balance.

Peace

i'm very interested in this! i too am musical, and its the energy in music that excites me. i'm sure we've all had those situations where we've been listening to the radio, and then that one song has come on, and you've stopped in your tracks. you don't know why you like the song but its communicating to you in other ways.

there are also theories out there (i wish i was better at google!) which claim that music is given to us by spirits to a certain extent.

and Black_Napkins, i too am annoyed which the state of mainstream music today. it's very tricky though. i know that it's all down to what you know, and that for people that have been brought up completely on chart music, they must think it's good because they haven't experienced anything else. but perhaps that area of life experience just isnt what they're here for this time.

perhaps when i've made some semi-good material i will share it with you folks

Yeah, haha i'm just now starting to really get into learning alot of thoery, i like it alot.

Mainstream music is a sick puppy, the music isn't that terrible....music is just music. It's the way it's marketed and dumbed down for the general public that i really hate.(I guess you could say that for just about everything else in this country too though..sadly.)

It's just a big money making machine, it's not pure like music should be. It's tainted by big record companies pushing all the buttons, getting 'look' that will sell to the general public.

I'm under the impression that if you have the right look, and the right sound for the right time, you can make alot of money, despite your level of talent. Hell, i know a few guitar players who are 10x better than anyone you will hear on your local radio station, but they aren't the most attractive people, and they aren't willing to conform to the 'popular sound' of the time.(whatever it may be)

Ugh, sorry that has nothing to do with the afterlife, but i hate to see good talent go un-noticed.

Hey,

I also love music so had too comment! Music is a great communicator and a great expressor, we can reach out to people it and join people together, but its so much more than that...so much more words cannot explain but I'm sure were all on the same track in this thread so I don't need to.

I agree with musc today in it is more looks over talent and I do prefer bands who write their own stuff as well lol as its from their soul and what their about which is the way it should be. But it isn't all bad, music is music and if it touches someone it has done its job, and plus some of this music I do love haha (mainstream), some of the songs really do give me a boost, or make me think and the lyrics can be good as well....shame the person isn't doing it for the love of music though....well some i don't want to generalise as its wrong and is specially in this case!

I must leave by telling you about a band i love (sorry Justin yourve heard so much lol), the Red Hot Chili Peppers who are mainstream now in a sense, but they write their own music and it is from the soul and deeper, theirs levels of understanding in there music, many levels, and so much energy booming out for everyone who listens (and actually likes) to take a bit off and boost them up, and to all them obsessed fans (why are you looking at me like that!? Smiley) then we just touch the clouds when we listen and when I'm feeling down or just want to rock out with stlye which is not style in conventional terms, i turn it up loud and can't stop smiling...and signing....badly haha lol. Plus through my little compared to others but long to me years of following Ive come to know and love them guys, they are wacky and crazy mofos! And also they didn't care about looks or how they acted they were just crazy look at some pictures on a search for red hot chili peppers on google or something lol!

Thanx for listening and letting me bore you to death again!

Perhaps music is here for our inspiration, for our motivation.  I know that I probably wouldn't be here if I didn't have music to listen to... it's strange to say such a thing, but it really is that important for me in day to day life.  I'm sure plenty of people can say the same thing.

Strange thing... I found out a few months ago that my 2nd cousin Carlos (an unbelievable guitarist) died from a heart attack back in 2003.  I was shocked at this news, and some part of me wondered if his death had anything to do with my sudden, random urge to take music theory and later get vocal lessons.  I had never before had any interest in learning music but around the time of his death something made me feel like I just *had* to... really odd when I think about it.

One of my favorite musicians, Nina Hagen (think Maria Callas meets Godzilla meets Betty Boop) has very distinct daemon that seems to transform her into an entirely different persona when she's performing - I would kill to see one of her shows (figuratively, of course!).  Some say this daemon is found in all kinds of creative work.  She's been pretty spiritual since the early 80s, I believe, and recently did an album of Indian spiritual music.

Words in music have always been secondary to me, as well.  I've always been more interested in the arrangements and emotion that I can find in a piece/song.  One of my favorite bands, Cocteau Twins, rarely ever used real lyrics in their music.  They managed to pull it off and gain a large cult fanbase because of the singer's confident, angelic emoting - which contrasts with her other persona, the one with a heap of unfortunate human self-image issues.

I have discovered something wonderful about music. It can actually be used to improve your health; mentally, physically, and spiritually.
I have been using the Orion electronic brainwave synchronizer now for a year with audiostrobe. There are many great compositions out that marry sound with pulsating lights for mental alterations. My favorite by far is called "Spirit Of The Air" by Dr. Jeffrey Tompson. I feel that it not only is an enjoyable experience, but that it also improves my mental capacity.

Sincerely,
Ralph

I think maybe some would say that w/o vibrations, there actually would be no life, space or time, since everything vibrates and has a frequency...  Read some stuff about Nicola Tesla, very interesting material from a hundred years ago about resonance, harmonics, etc.  This reminded me of this Hemi-sync invention I've been reading about on this site and Monroe's site.  Anyone who plays electric guitar knows how to make that particular phenomenon happen, to bend two strings and create an off key summation of them as a 3rd note that can be tuned by moving either or both of the bent strings.  It's not good for much other than a transition, but it's a cool effect to play with, and definitely focuses the brain to separate things out and pick the 3rd note.

I've often wondered what evolutionary purpose music has.  It's a purely human thing, but seems to have no great purpose other than our enjoyment and enrichment, just like all art.  Music to the human brain has provable and unmistakable effect, good and bad, depending on all these different factors.  I suppose we could have evolved to enjoy music as a primal bonding thing or trance inducing ritual thing, but cultures have such different ideas of what makes music!  And there doesn't seem to be any reason to have it for our survival.  I've gone for months without hearing any music (boot camp) and it didn't hurt me a bit - although I certainly made up for it afterwards... I learned to play guitar!  Weird.  All music seems to share variations in vibration though, and infinitely different arrangements of the variations.  Really interesting topic and one of the great mysteries in my opinion.

It's cool that when we all think music can finally progress no further and is perhaps total crap (like now), a new revolution comes along and some really amazing, timeless material comes out.  Perhaps it mimics our consciousness evolution, sort of happens in fits and starts!  Anyway, great topic.

Hey,

I dont think i could ever go without music. Music is everything, i agree it is bonding, it is having a good time and enjoying yourself, it is also touching but sometimes so touching it opens you up to new sides, e.g:a spiritual side, a higher energy, a plane of higher energy where this energy comes from and enables theses songs to touch so many.

Once again all I can say is for me four words, Red Hot Chili Peppers, they touch and open my heart so much and i enjoy and love them so much, they for me are the best band in the universe!

Ok,

So I'm driving home, and the B52s come on.  For those of you who don't know them, they are/were a funky retro band, rock, with some campy humor and not great singers at first, but they came out with better music and learned to sing (the women).

They were singing with so much passion the song "Roam"

Roam if you want to
Roam around the world
Roam if you want to.  Without Wings, Without
Wheels!
Roam if you want to!
Roam around the world
Roam if you want to
Without anything but the love we feel!

Kind of corny, but I was singing, tapping along, and thinking of us on this website!

Well you lost me a bit with all that 3rd note summnation thing, but it sounded pretty kool.

Totally agree with the quote above, music is a great barometer but like Ryan (or someone else) brought up before, unfortunately there is a lot of corporate control involved...

But the times they are a changing!

Hey guys!

I do love that this thread has been brought back up, i do love this one so much because of what its all about and believe its something we can truly get to grips with and love and understand in this lifetime and its full of expression of us and the universe.

And i gotta say Justin!!! Thanks so much to Irene, I am so grateful and truly appreciate what she did for me, I now have 2 CD's of Pearl Jam, 'Rearview Mirror: The Best Of'. Ive got it all now and must admit I am impressed, i like this! Gotta listen to more though, I have a feel for it but need to get the whole view Smiley. Irene also sent me a band called PowderFinger, and i love these so much already, specially track one! It is such a good song and i relate it to me and New Zealand and really feel it.

Just wondering does anyone play instruments here and hows it going? I play bass and trying to get alot better especially recently, i learnt all around the world yesterday, wlel have for a while, just the intro i'm a little dodgy on lol, i can do the speed and the beginning bit its just where it goes down. Anyway love to hear of you all!
