Ghost Whisperer TV Show
Oct 6th, 2005 at 8:57pm

Has anyone seen the new CBS show "Ghost Whisperer"?  I was wondering what people thought about it (especially those who have done retrievals).

It seems James Van Praagh is doing a lot of the writing or at least input to the story lines although I don't know if that is good or bad.

From what I have seen it seems very Hollywood so far, but at least the subject matter is being put out for people to ponder.

I've seen one episode and thought it was great. We always have to make allowances for the 'Hollywood aspect.'  I'm very happy about it as it will make those who are unaware of retrievals, aware. And of the afterlife.

Welcome to the forum Bill. Wink

If people go for that "Hollywood aspect" it will help keep it on the air, so I can look past that.  I'm just happy to see another show like this.  I hope it stays.

I watched both episodes. For the most part I liked them. It's good to see that with all the horror movies that are coming out these days, that a show with a more positive outlook has come out.

I wonder if it will succeed. For some reason people get off on horror movies.

I guess with this latter point in mind, the show is a little bit inconsistent. Jennifer Love Hewitt's character has been seeing ghosts since she was a little kid. She sees them in public all the time, as if it is a natural occurance. But then on occasion they sneak in a bit of scarry sounding music, and make it seem as if she has been spooked. I think the show would be better served to forget about the spook factor, considering its overall message.

Jennifer Love Hewitt does a good job of seeming like a sweetie pie.

Yes, she is cute isn't she.  I'm sure that's the only reason my husband watches the show with me.

Wink

The show is based on a woman named Mary Ann.  Anyone ever hear of her or read her stuff?  I don't know what all she's got out, but I have her book called As Alive, So Dead.  It's good.

Vicky, where did you get the book? I just looked on amazon.com and it's $64 for both new and used. I usually buy used books for under $10. Gulp, this is too expensive for me.

I love it!

It's the same stuff that I do in my office, except that she does it in the outside world and gets all kinds of tangled up and dramatic.

Hi Mairlyn,

Huh?  What on earth?  I am pretty darn sure I got mine from Half.com.  That's where I get quite a bit of my books as they are pretty cheap.  The cover of mine says $14.95 though.

Hi Everyone...

I've been watching 'Ghost Whisperer' but I have mixed feelings about it, especially compared to the show 'Medium'.  'Ghost Whisperer' certainly is a typical  Hollywood production.  I find the stories very predictable.

I was very surprised to learn James VanPraagh was involved with it, but I thought I read in the credits that it's written by a Jonathan Gray (I think I have the name, spelling right..memory problems occasionally).  Isn't he the author of that 'Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus' bit of oversimplified pop psychology?

I feel like they're aiming for a certain audience, and that they want the show to be both 'spooky' or scary and syrupy, a tear jerker.  I think Jennifer Love Hewitt is cute, and perfect for their purposes, but I still feel a phoniness about the show, with too-obvious  attempts at manipulating the viewer (starting with the title).  Still, it's good that another such show is on.

I like 'Medium' better.  I don't feel so manipulated by the plots. It's also based on a real individual-- Alison DuBois.  If anyone hasn't seen it, it's worth checking out.  This might sound strange, but 'Medium' seems to be aimed at a more 'mature'
audience (spiritually and otherwise), than is 'Ghost Whisperer.'  I could be wrong.  I guess it's too soon to judge 'Ghost Whisperer.'
(Also...I wasn't a fan of 'Touched By An Angel,' for example, and I think that's the audience
'Ghost Whisperer' seems aimed at. )

Hi..  I know I shouldn't bother with this.  It's kinda' off-topic, but it's now 21 minutes into Ghost Whisperer and I can already see where they're going.  The girl's true love is going to make sure she gets hooked up with whoever got his donated heart.  A plot already used in a movie, I believe.
This show idoesn't even try to be original.

Sorry.  Embarrassed  Stuff like that drives me crazy.  And on a more personal note:  I'm the recipient of what they call a cadaveric liver- from a 32 year old woman, in May, 2001.  Saved my life- temporarily,
anyway.  (Need a 2nd transplant due to problems.)

And now comes the hokey transplant stuff.. along with the 'spooky' stuff that rarely, if ever, occurs with transplants.  Oh, well.  Audiences do seem to love it.  But they also love quality, when it's given to them, as it is in Medium.

I would be more interested to know which show does a better job of "getting it right" about what the person experiences..or are both right but for different people?

That's without the Hollywood hype of course."Medium" is sooo melodramatic. But Allison has a range of experiences. The other one just sees spirits and acts as their translator. Maybe as thr writers get more comfortable with the show that will expand.

What's the book by the woman in Massachusetts who recieved some thransplant from a guy in Maine I think and she developed a taste for beer among other things. She looked his family up. He loved beer. That book was popular 8-10 years ago and probably affected the way people think about transplants, but it also made people more aware of being donors. (She moved away from Massachusetts.)

I just finished watching Ghost Whisperer for the first time, as a  practicing Psychic Medium myself one needs to ask the producers of this show why are they implying to the public that only stuck Ghosts can be seen ( the correct title for what Mary Ann is doing is called mediumship) the show is good, I enjoyed it and I give it a thumbs up, but if one can see a stuck ghost then one can certainly see visiting spirits which are more plentiful and around everyone. I can only speak for my own experiences  but usually Stuck Spirits stay in one spot or location ,  I have not so far seen them out walking the streets. Perhaps I will in the future. The show Medium could be taken down a notch and do away with   those  heavy Hollywood Mellowdrama effects, and  here again the producers imply that all of her information is obtained only when she sleeps, but I still enjoy the show and its making what I do more acceptable and received with open minds, someone asked which show does it more correctly, well if one would take a portion from both and combined it then it would be more on board . love linn splinnusa@aol.com

Hey!

Well i wish i had to choose over which show portrayed the afterlife better lol, In the UK we only have one show going atm which is a relief as nothing has ever been done like before. Its called "Afterlife" and is a drama, basically about a medium who sees spirits, she can't choose who comes to her, but sometimes spirits come who need help, one example she heard about a little girls death and this girl then came to visit her and she helped solve the crime but theres loads of twists and people who don't believe her and give her hassel. But its the only thing on of this sort so still good to watch, and anything to do with the afterlife/spirits on TV even though not totally correct in my eyes is still a welcomed watched!
