Hi Nomad -
If you look in Tibetan mysticism you'll find a discussion of seven states of the world. Three good, three not-so-good, and one that is liberated. These are depicted as the major themes on the well nown Mandala of the Wheel of Life.
The three good states are based on joy in what we do, contentment with the moment, and open minded truthfulness. The three negative states are based on unhappiness with what we are doing, insecurity and fear about the present moment, and self prideful delusion. To escape from these negative states we need to make the willful choice to be happy, so that we find some kind of reward from whatever we do; to be willing to accept our situation, recognizing that everything is one and we are simply experiencing the playing out of past karms as things improve; and to be honest about everything, including the stuff that we would prefer not to think about.
If you prefer to take the attitude that life is hell, OK. But it isn't necessary to view life that way. The problem is not in life, but in the choices we make, and that boils down to being 100% responsible for your personal destiny. If you desire to change, it will take a bit of work, but quite soon things will brighten up.
