Hi Ryan-
When a person "steps back" from an experience to "test it" it causes them to leave the mode of participation as an element of that situation. For example, when you "watch yourself typing on the keyboard" it is one degree removed from actually doing the typing.
It faded because you left the scene to stand outside of it to test it. Since you were no longer in the scene, it was no longer available to you.
As an option you might try, "I am turning to the right," and sense doing it, "I am turning to the left," and sense doing it. "I am here and doing this," whatever it is that you're doing. This keeps you in the mode of actor in the situation. Then the situation defines you, just as it does in everyday experience, and it should continue indefinitely.
