I'd like to add this to the story as the end of the red nova article references the study:
http://www.exn.ca/dailyplanet/view.asp?date=8/2/2005scroll down to "sixth sense for danger". Daily Planet is a show here in Canada on the discovery channel and they took a serious look at the study of the sixth sense. The science is virtually indisputable.
The idea that we can "fortell" the future has been verified, although singularly, most individuals only have about 3.5 seconds of precognition. Not everyone has this ability though. It certainly explains how some people are phenomenally better at certain activities such as fighter pilots, martial arts, or even chess: they can "sense" the next move.
To skeptics: the experiments performed involved sensory deprevation and completely random so there is no way to "predict" an event through experience or hyper sensitivity to other stimuli, ie the movement of air or visual cues.
Sort of validates Stan Lee's "spidey sense" eh?
