Family Gathering
May 14th, 2008 at 10:10pm

About a month after my mother died I had a dream that my whole family had gathered in a department store.  It was the same family members that used to celebrate holidays together at my mom and dad's house for many years.  Although I didn't see everybody specifically, I knew we were all together.  We were mingling with each other on the side of the checkout stands where you go before you have paid.  Nobody seemed to be showing any particular emotion of sadness or even joy.  We were all just quietly talking to one another.  I looked past the checkout stands and through the big windows at the front of the store.  I saw my mother was standing outside looking in through the windows at the rest of us.  She didn't have any particular emotion on her face either.  She was just watching all of us from the outside.  I felt kind of sad that she was outside by herself.

Greetings Thistle,

It's good to have your posts and comments--welcome!

The Afterlife sometimes requires some adjusting. Maybe your mother is still getting used to being away from the family she loves.  She sounds 'pensive,' thinking so deeply that emotions are deep within and don't show.
Can you send her loving thoughts and mental messages to help her? It may seem like 'just' imagination to do so, but we're learning that those in the afterlife can pick up on what we're saying to them.

Bets

Thank you for the warm welcome Bets.  Thanks for your advice about giving her loving thoughts and mental messages too.  I'm afraid at times I have been angry with her for leaving.  I realize it wasn't her choice but I miss her so much.   Cry

Yes, pensive, that is exactly the look my mom had in that dream.  She has been dead almost two years now.  I still talk to her a lot when I'm alone or with somebody who understands.  My husband doesn't really get it, so I don't do it around him.   Wink    Shortly after her death, for several months I would say, some things would happen that made me think maybe she was paying me a visit.  Things happened to other family members as well.  Is it possible for spirits to be able to give us signs?  Or is it just wishful thinking on our part?

Hello Thistle:

I've analyzed thousands of my own dreams, and found that they often contain messages from our friends/guides in the spirit World.  Going by the symbology I've received, I come up with the following.

The department store = the physical World, materialism
The cash registers = checking out of the physical World and moving on to the World of spirit
Your family's lack of emotion = quite often while in this World people don't find the emotion we really want, which is divine love
The department store window = the barrier between the physical World and the spirit World
Your mother being outside = she is in the World of spirit
Your mother not showing a lot emotion = It is time to stop grieving for your loss and let go of your anger, so your mother can move on with her life of divine love in the World of spirit. You will meet her again when it is your time to move on to the World of spirit.

I think, because you remember that you could see your mother looking into the store, where your family was gathered, that it could possibly be an invitation to communicate further. If it feels right to you to let go, as mentioned above, that might be helpful to you. However, if you are curious, there seems to me to be permission for you to communicate with her, in whatever way is possible, through thoughts or dreams, perhaps.

The window is there for a reason, I believe.

recoverer your analysis of my dream makes a lot of sense.  Now I can clearly see the symbolism in it.  Since my mother was on the other side of the window she was obviously in a different world from the rest of us who were just going on with our lives in a unemotional way.  It was as if we were all tuned out to what really matters which is what you said, divine love.  What could be more material than being in a department store?  Pardon me for parroting back what you said but I'm just trying to digest it all.  I had never really tried to break down each aspect of that dream before.  Wow!  Thanks for your input.  It is really helpful.

Hi Blink,  I hope you are right about my mom perhaps offering an invitation for further communication.  She looked so little standing on the other side of the window.  Little and alone yet not upset by her circumstances.  She had that pensive look that betson mentioned.  It was odd too because I seemed to be the only one that noticed her.  I had mentioned that after her death different things happened around the house that led me to believe that maybe her spirit was here with me from time to time.  Do you think it's possible for our loved ones to interact in the physical world that we live in?

Love,  Thistle

Absolutely, Thistle. Our loved ones are so much closer than we can even imagine. I think they find all kinds of ways to speak to us.

The honeysuckle blooming across the alley before my residence of two years....my grandmother is there. I have felt her, and continue to cling to her memory, and that memory, in particular, of the honeysuckle flowers around her house. When I moved into this new place, it was winter, and the very last thought in my mind was what might bloom from the ground that spring. Little did I know, that I would soon be surrounded by fragrant blossoms of many kinds, trailing over the fence across the way. The trees and the bushes and the trailing vines, full of flowers and color, that I never planted.

It was not an accident, that I found myself in this place. There are no accidents, as far as I can tell.

Thistle:

Here's another possible interpretation. Perhaps your mother felt sad when she looked at family members in the department store because she felt they were being too materialistic and need to focus on spiritual matters. I don't know your family, so I can't say for certain.

Oh, goodness, recoverer,  I certainly hope that isn't the case!   Undecided  I don't think any of us even had any merchandise that we were intending on buying.  I don't know if it matters but the department store was a Kohl's.  While I do shop in that store occasionally, Target is the department store that I frequent the most.  I don't know if any of that makes a difference as far as my dream goes.  And I don't know if this matters but my mother was one of the most optimistic, happy people I have ever met.  I wish in my dream she would have been smiling and waving.

Hi Thistle I got the feeling your mom only showed you her serious face so you would start opening up to the idea that she is making an effort to rend the veil (old fashioned term for making contact)

see, now you are thinking about her more often, this is an opening that occurred in your perception since the dream..she wants you to expect her, and so the very idea of expecting her will cause you to be more receptive to a contact. in time actual conversation, short conversation will occur, I speculate, as I have a friend who's mother passed on and she had the very same type of dream activity as yourself.

it doesn't mean she's unhappy where she's at necessarily, is my main point.

I often dream of malls, shopping areas, and we need these type of symbols in the dream landscape to decipher an area of "exchange."
Happy exploring  Smiley

Hi LaffingRain,  I must say this dream or visitation, whatever it was, has stuck with me and given me food for thought.  My mother has been dead nearly two years and I had this dream shortly afterwards and I can still remember it vividly.  Other things have happened that have made me wonder.  For instance the evening after she died I was sitting here at my computer when my dog walked up beside my chair.  She started turning slowly in circles while looking up towards the ceiling and growling.  I had to put her outside.  She has never done that before or since.  And a touch lamp in my bedroom turned itself on several times over a period of weeks after she died.  It had never done that before and hasn't done it again for many months.  And it only turned on at night.  Signs from my mother or just coincidences?  I don't know.  But those are only two examples of things that have made me go hmmmmm?  Thanks for your time and input.  Everybody has been so kind and helpful here.  I have never heard of "retrieval" before and am trying to figure out just what it is.  It sounds very interesting but confusing.

Hi Thistle We've got a large retrieval archives set up here; click at the top of the page under small print Retrieval Archive..probably explains the varied retrieval process better than I could.

I do think your mom has been making an effort. lights going on and off is a classic example of spirit contact reported by many.

will share an animal story, these also are numerous examples by posters. My daughter's cat had to be put down recently due to a disease it had. there was another cat in the room. they were great pals.
as the little spirit lite of the cat exited it's body, no one could see it but the other cat.

this was a very touching moment for the 3 people in the room. the white cat had wrapped her paws around the boy cat who was leaving and she was licking and purring furiously as if she didn't want him to go. as the medication took effect she released her hold and her eyes slowly followed the- (to us) invisible spirit upwards to the very top of the ceiling and there she held her gaze, as if frozen in place for a minute or so.

animals can see and hear this other dimension better than us. All those on the other side, like your mom, have this urge to let us know of our spirit bodies living on, plus they love us and are trying to awaken us.  my grandmother became my mother's helper and spiritual aide when she moved on. I photographed her as an orb over my mother's head!

plus things happened when she was around, but mainly during dream language.

pretty neat huh?

LaffingRain that is all so very neat!  Reading about your daughter's cat had me teary-eyed.  It's truly amazing and sad too.   Cry

Yeah, the light in my bedroom going on seemed like a possible sign.  A couple of electronic toys have gone on by themselves a couple of times too.  One actually did it about a month ago.  My husband told me to go make it stop!   Grin Of course I said "Hi" to Mom when I went back to turn it off just in case it was she who turned it on.   Wink

Thank you for pointing out the Retrieval Archive.  I will try to understand it.
