Advice for my first trip to TMI?
Apr 29th, 2008 at 11:53pm

I will be attending the Gateway Voyage program this summer.  I have read Monroe's books and all but the Bruce's guide in his series.  I listen to Hemi-Sync occasionally, but it seemed too difficult to set aside time.  I'd like the opportunity to be in a great environment and dedicate an entire week...    and so, I'm off to Faber, Virginia.

Can anyone give me any advice for my trip there?  I'm telling myself not to put too much pressure on it, and regardless of what happens, just attending and being there will be an experience in itself.  A small part of me speaks up, and says....   "I'm not so sure"  or "if you consciously cannot take anything away from that week, will you really be ok with that?"

Also, advice on what to bring that they may not include in the packet I will receive will be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance, and I wish you all the best.

Greetings BEremita,

Welcome here! Congratulations on taking the next step!
(I would have tried to fit Bruce's guidebook exercises in before then too but I'm sure you'll do fine.)

People on this path are so 'great' that surely you'll get to know a few that will make your experience valuable.
And you are establishing a trail of unconscious connections, spiritual as well as the social, that will show up later if you're not quite ready now.

I've not been to TMI but live in similiar terrain--days are glorious, warm. Rain is even warm, not raw. Weather is so changeable these days that a sweater might be handy for evening

Enjoy, lucky you!

Hallo BEremita!

Can't give you any first-hand advice, I'm afraid, as living here in the UK, and with financial, work and personal committments over the years, I've never managed to get to TMI, so you are very lucky. I can say that Robert Monroe, his books, his Institute and all its offshoots and ramifications (which of course includes Bruce Moen's work and this site) have had a more profound effect on my thinking than anything else I've encountered, something no doubt true for countless others worldwide.

I first came across his work in the late 70s, when I was looking for relaxation tapes, and bought some of his from a local retailer; they were then branded as "Mentronics". After further research, I joined TMI as a sustaining member, (until just a few years ago) getting newsletters and free member tapes. So, there are a large number of all manner of hemi-sync tapes here, and like you, for a long time I never had the opportunity to do them all justice (and for many years, not listen to any at all)!

I can recommend a new biography of Monroe, by Ronald Russell ("The Journey of Robert Monroe", Hampton Roads, 2007), which brings his story and that of TMI, right up to date, so may be worth a read for you. The author (also living in UK) has told me that a purpose-built Hemi-Sync centre is opening for "business" here in the UK (near Glastonbury, Somerset) this autumn, with an inaugural Gateway Voyage, so maybe at last I will get to attend, either then, or later!

Hope you enjoy the experience!

Alfred

Hello BEremita,
I did the Gateway Voyage in Europe, and was in Virginia for Lifeline .

I guess the best you could do is, when you start your journey to TMI, say goodbye for a week to your home matters and just enjoy your vacation with open eyes and a light heart.

If you feel like, you may try relaxation exercises spread over the day. Not long, not deep, but regularly. But only when you feel comfortable with it. First rule: No pressure.

Don't read what others have experienced during TMI programs in the moment, to prevent a too narrow focus of what is to expect.

When you're there, don't be disappointed when nothing seems to happen in the first days. I thought that at the beginning, but only at the beginning hehe.

I think you'll have a more than nice week.
Spooky

P.S.: If you're a smoker, take enough cigarettes with you, as there's no store nearby.

Thank you all for your replies; I'm very thankful for the opportunity to attend.  I'm looking forward to it, that's for sure.

Betson - Warm rain...    oh, and 8:40 pm sunsets...  perfect.  Smiley  Hopefully I'll get to experience a thunderstorm or two.  San Diego doesn't have the more diverse weather.  It gets quite boring!

Alfred - I will buy the book this weekend.  It is now officially added to my list.

Spooky - It will feel great once I turn off my cell phone and cut contact with the world outside the retreat.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply.

Greetings to you BE--

My first experience with TMI was a weekend in Connecticut 10 years ago (Yikes!)  and we had a terrible blizzard, so the driving there from New Hampshire was slow.  Because we had about 30 people and no chec units, we all bunked out on the floor and had a myriad of wires and head phones to each person on the floor.  We could hear each other humming the chant and also hear persons who snored!  But it was a wonder experience as everyone shared some part of their "travels" with the group.

It was 5 years ago that I attended the Gateway program and two years ago to the Guidelines program in Virginia.  From the time you step off the plane until you return home, the is a joy that can't be expressed.  Bring warm clothes, also, in case the temperature drops, as you will be up in the mountains.  I attended in April and the temp went up and down like a hot air balloon.  But in general, the weather should be warm to mild.  The food was more of a south western cusine the first time I attended but the second time, the food wasn't as spicy.  There is a good variety, and always salad.  If you have a special diet, call ahead.

The beds are built into the walls and have a curtain, two occupants per room.  If you are over 6 feet tall or are a larger person, you may also want to call ahead.  I remember one man who was about 6'4" and about 250 lbs. who had a room to himself because he required a larger bed.  Even with that, he said he slept at an angle so his feet wouldn't dangle. There is a handi-cap entrance, if needed.

I brought my own pillow and a light weight blanket as I like to meditate sitting up and I cool down.  Bring your camera and extra batteries. Batteries get drained faster because of the high energy there.  Also, you will have some free time to  yourself, so bring a book or a laptop or some CD's.  Also bring some comfortable shoes.  We aren't allowed to wear shoes in the "White Room" and most of us sat on the floor.  I had some slippers I wore inside and my sneaks for out side.  It's amazing that we are able to sleep at night with all the meditation we do all day.  You will absolutely love the people.  As for expectations of OBES, etc--- some people had them, some didn't.  During the Gateway program, one of the participants I was with was extremely disappointed at the technique used and never got over his disappointment.  I often wonder how he is doing now.  I "went with the flow" and felt very much at peace with myself.  The love is overwhelming.  The sharing is sometimes sad, sometimes happy--- all aspects of our feelings come out.

If I could afford to go back again, I would in a snap.  Remember to bring your note book and an extra pen.  Have a great and memorable "trip".

I have been to TMI many times, and am going back in July for Starlines.

Have fun. Relax and have no expectations.

Take chocolate.

It was life changing for me. Most amazing week of this lifetime. (If you where glasses, take a spare pair just in case.)You might as well leave the cell phone at home. Your watch also. I think your going to have the time of your life. Make sure you come back and tell us all about it.
