A nationally renowned brain researcher was the featured guest on "Coast to Coast" last night. Here are just 4 of his more interesting reports about recent brain research:
(1) The myth that we only use 10% of our brains is traceable to motivational speaker, Dale Carnegie, who misquotes psychologist William James on this point. The claim has no basis in brain research.
(2) There is no relationship between genius and brain size. Men have larger brains than women, even when women weigh just as much. The chief difference between the sexes is that men are better at discerning spatial relationships.
(3) There is a dramatic difference in brain activity between professional and amateur musicians. The difference suggests that the brain can be altered through training and conditioning to perform more intelligently.
(4) If children learn to play a musical instrument, their cognitive skills will generally be superior to those who lack such training.
