Hi Ellie, I second Bets, ask for or pretend a helper is there, it worked for me and Bruce tells for others it works too, surprisingly easy.
About consciousness states when going to sleep, I have usually three states before I fall asleep: 1. I lay me down, tired; this is very soft, relieving, joyful. 2. Much thought activity starts, about the day, and about everything 3. Then there is the entering sleep phase: Sometimes many pictures/scenes enter my mind, only glimpses, very fast; sometimes fear comes up of entities in my appartment or in my room; voices I hear, short, sometimes loud, sometimes it brings me back to the former "thinking"-phase 2. This active phase number 3 I have only sometimes, after some days it becomes less active. It's probably that your normal waking consciousness is still there to some degree while you already have opened up to other realities than the physical-waking state reality.
