In this real life (non-fiction) account of a dog named Sheila (from the website "Action for Singapore Dogs"), it is clear that Sheila the dog could have left the home when her previous owner abandoned her, but she chose to faithfully remain.

Thankfully, she is now in good hands, and is up for adoption.
