Do you live in Puerto Rico?
Jan 5th, 2007 at 11:42am

My wife, Pharon, and I are planning a vacation visit to Puerto Rico and would like to connect with someone living there who could give us suggestions for places to see and things to do.

Thanks,

Bruce

Hi Bruce,

You don't say where you're staying or what your interests are, but if you like hiking I would suggest the national forest there, El Junque - breathtaking rain forest not far from San Juan; you'd need one full day to do it right, very hilly. You might want to explore old town in San Juan along the harbor (touristy but interesting), and there are great forts and the 2nd oldest church in the Americas. In old San Juan, Al Dente a couple of blocks in from the harbor is a terrific restaurant. There is crime in San Juan, so be aware of where you are and who is around you late at night.

There are great beaches along the South of the country. It is part of the US, so renting a car is feasible, and they drive on the RH side of the road. Good for snorkeling and diving right off the beach in places. If you and Pharon are foodies, you're in luck. Be sure to try the roast pig (joints tend to be out a ways, in the mountains) and the ceviche.

Say, do you have any information about Janice's workshop next weekend on Feb 10th? My email to her bounced back.

Hey John,

Thanks for the tips.  We just recently made reservations at a Parador in the Rincon area.  We plan to take lots of side trips on the western end of the island to explore and scope out the area.  Then during the second half of our two week stay we plan to take our time driving along the southern coast, staying a night or two in Ponce and then up the eastern coast on our way back to San Juan.  A little sightseeing around the San Juan area and back home to Colorado.

Part of the reason for our trip is to find out what it might be like to live in Puerto Rico on a more permanent basis.  Who knows?  If we like it there we may return later in the year and try out island living for a couple of years.

About Janice's workshop, neither of the email addresses I have for her seem to work any more.  Not sure what that means, but it probably doesn't bode well for the workshop actually happening.

Hi Bruce,

You've got a good tour set up. To live in PR you've got to like the heat. Our last trip to visit friends was in NOV last year and it hit 100 F a couple of times. In the mountains and on the beach are cooler. It ain't cheap to live there, either. We're looking seriously at Ecuador, specifically the cloud forest about 2,500-3,500' in the Andes an hour or so out of Quito. They have the dollar for currency, drive on the same side of the road and have the same electrical system, so all your gear and appliances work there. The people are a lot nicer than in PR. There are nice people everywhere, of course, but we're noticing a lot more sullenness in PR and the other Caribbean islands. None of them have the graciousness of Ecuador, which also has great beaches (Pacific Ocean, though).

When are you going be in PR?

That's too bad about Janice. There must be some problem if she fell off the radar like that. I've read a lot of OBE books including Monroe, Peterson, Elder, Bruce, Buhlman, your first four and others. I'm very interested in attending your workshop. I sleep with a CPAP device, which makes it tough to try the OBE exercises, and thought your approach might really work for me. If there are no other workshops on the horizon in FL, maybe I should look at hosting one. I put on investment seminars (www.callwriter.com) but am not tied in to the crowd seeking the kind of experience your workshops provide. Any thoughts on that would be welcome.

Thanks for the heads up Bruce.  Was wondering about this myself, so also thanks for asking, John. Smiley  I realized i wouldn't be able to afford it anytime soon anyways so i'm not too upset about this.   Hope Janice is doing well though.

We are to arrive in San Juan March 6 and spend the first night there just to rest up, then we drive to the Rincon area to stay for about 10 days.  After kicking back for a few days we'll do some exploring and sightseeing on the west end of the island.  Then after taking a couple of days to work our way back to San Juan we'll spend the last two days there before flying back to snow and cold in Denver.

Part of the reason to chose Puerto Rico is that neither of us can afford any health insurance and after my stroke three years ago I became eligible for medicare.  Ain't much but it's better than no health coverage, and since Puerto Rico is still part of the US medicare will still be available.  Places like Panama looked great, Ecuador might too, but any form of health insurance would disappear there.  So, Puerto Rico is the first place we'll check out.

After living all my 58 years in climates like Alaska and Minnesote with four seasons, including one very cold and snowy one, I've grown to appreciate the heat.  I figure Puerto Rico can't be much more oppressive heat and humidity than Minnesota in the summertime  Cool and I guess we'll find out.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Bruce

Hi Bruce,

PR works on many levels for Americans, no doubt. Would you be interested in meeting our friends down there? Carmelo works for the PR government and Gilda is an internist at a clinic, who mostly deals with high blood pressure and diabetes patients. They could orient you to the medical system and other things of interest. I have not checked to see their availability, and don't know the dates in SJ that would work for you, but if you are interested, I will check with them and see about getting you guys together. You could also talk to Gilda on the phone (Carmelo, too, if your Spanish is good). Let me know.

Keep in mind that some countries have good government-sponsored programs available to resident foreigners, almost all of which are better than plans offered in the US, at least considering the cost/benefit ratio. For example, Costa Rica offers the CCSS national health plan, which costs something like $30 to 50 a month and pays 100% at state-run hospitals and facilities, and there is a government insurance that costs $100/year and is good at private health providers but only pays 80%. This is available to foreigners residing in Costa Rica. SEE: http://www.costaricareisen.com/gesundheit/versicherung_eng.htm
