Title: Pronuniation of Moen
Post by HerbHornist on Oct 25th, 2017 at 5:47pm
Since I talk about what I am working on, I would like to know how Bruce pronounces his name. Is it Moh-en, Mohn, Main or the Germanic Mön?

It's "mow" (as in "mow the lawn") and "when"

I have been saying Mow-wen, so I guess that's close.

Thanks, Vicky

Things are set up so that you have to keep reincarnating until you can pronounce all names correctly. If you have difficulty while reading "War and Peace", you are in trouble.

Uh oh  :-/

I may be in trouble then, LOL.

I can appreciate someone asking how to pronounce something correctly.  I have a terrible time getting things right but a lot is due to the fact that some people say something one way, some another.  For some words I guess it's just a matter of preference.

This reminds me of the time I was excited and telling Bruce that I started learning I Ching.  I pronounced it with the I.  Bruce said something like, "Yeah, I Ching is really interesting and could be a useful tool." (He pronounced it with an E).  I'm so literal, so I was like, "Oh wow, E Ching, what's that? I've never heard of that, is it the same kind of thing?"  He laughed and said, "It's the way it's pronounced, at least that's how I've always heard it."

I study the Hawaiian language, and with it it's imperative that you pronounce things correctly or else you're saying a completely different word with a completely different meaning!

The big Russian novels are chock full of patronymics, and that alone makes the books daunting. Difficult to track who is who if you aren't a Russian.

Not certain how I came to pronounce the I Ching correctly, though I always have.

On the other end of the spectrum we have people whose understanding a word is from having read it without making the connection with hearing it. Ken Kesey pointed this out in Sometimes a Great Notion. One of the characters in the novel had only ever read "tee hee" in Lil' Abner and assumed it sounds like what it looks like (it doesn't).

In Boston there's a group called the 'Ukelele 'Union. Drives me crazy when someone says, "yukulele." My own daughter, too. [smiley=shocked.gif]

Morrighan is correct, keeping track of War and Peace names can be difficult. It is almost as difficult as keeping track of who is working with Mr. Trump.

Vicky:

Here is a link to an NDE. I provide it, because the man who had the experience is involved with the I-Ching. I don't know anything about the I-Ching.

Upon reflection, it appears I learned to pronounce I Ching correctly because I watched the TV Show "Dark Shadows" every day after school. I clearly remember seeing black and white sticks being rolled for the hexagrams.

Stopped watching Dark Shadows when it became clear I was watching a soap. Of course I knew about soaps because Mom watched Ben Casey. I really wasn't into that kind of drama but I liked the spooky stuff. Some surprise, hey? But I was raised watching Leave It to Beaver and My Three Sons and what have you, and understood that all stories need to come to a conclusion in 30 minutes. An hour if you count The Avengers ....

So yeah, somewhere I Ching entered my consciousness courtesy of the electric television machine. Later I was to become very good with it .... And so it goes.
