It is incensing that the scientists (or the finance reporter?) called it 'a type of hallucination' in the short article. Then in the longer research article it states that they were working in hallucination studies, so it was safe 'type-casting' to call it that.
Unfortunately just because they've mapped out some energy paths doesn't mean they understand the implications.

Neat that they saw that top of the skull exit area that OBE-ers have diagrammed for centuries.

At least they're paying attention.  :)

On the other side, they also said that the scan showed that such areas were active that are monitoring motor skills (=movement).

I fear all these studies are either correlation studies with little scientific meaning or the sample size is far too small.

So - interesting, but not really a biggie in my opinion.

If the brain is like a radio - a receiver of consciousness, then the studies on the brain will never explain consciousness, since consciousness is primary and the physical world is secondary.

If you gave a man from the middle ages a television or radio, he might open it up to find the little people inside that were making the music or the video scenes.  He might deduce what some of the components of the television did - i.e. production of color on the screen.  Yet try as he might, no analysis would likely yield the conclusion that video and sound were transmitted wirelessly, and previously recorded, unless he became familiar with the fundamental science behind physics, electricity and sound. 

Consciousness appears to be independent from but connected to the physical plane.  Will we ever recognize the brain as an interface, on a quantum level for consciousness?

While its certainly true that materialist science still has enormous clout (I challenge anyone to find a supportive article of parapsychology on Wikipedia for example) there are a band of scientists (and growing) who question the materialist, biology creates consciousness paradigm. I am thinking of people such as Pim Van Lommel (cardiologist), Peter Fenwick (neuropsychologist), Gary Schwartz (neurologist/psychologist), Julie Beischel (pharmacologist), Stuart Hameroff (anaesthesiologist ). The problem materialism has is that an emerging amount of evidence contradicts it or at least is unexplainable within it- the traditional tactic has been to ignore it or dismiss it as fluke, chance,fraud or whatever, but as the body of evidence grows that becomes increasingly hard to do. Science itself is not the problem; dogmatic, ideologically driven science is the problem. An attitude which was demonstrated by the biologist Lewis Wolpert when he declared 'An open mind is a very bad thing - everything falls out'.
