Title: self limiting thinking Post by deric on Aug 11th, 2012 at 9:53am
I read a post where the term self limiting thinking was used. I asked to be shown my own self limiting thinking habits. It came to me that in any effort towards a goal be it starting a business, doing some artwork or building a musical composition I might at first have the attitude that the project would be a long and tedious effort. I've found though in working on a difficult part of some sheet music that after a few days what I thought incredibly hard becomes nearly effortless. And in playing the guitar if I think of it as playing the guitar really mediocre junk comes out. I'm trying now to by pass that concept because it is so self limiting. Instead I'm thinking of the guitar as a music or sound producing device and holding the thought of a really beautiful composition and not defining anything about it as to style, length or anything. I wonder where it will lead. I'd appreciate any thoughts on self limiting thinking. I'm sure our higher selves are full of good ideas if we can just get our conditioned minds out of the way.

Sometimes in order for me to tackle a project I have to be in the right mood for it, otherwise I know that self limiting thinking gets in the way. You know, you'd start the project but then find all these excuses or feelings that distract you from being productive. So I don't tackle a project unless and until I'm in the right mood for it. I sometimes have to tell myself that it's coming, and I WILL be in the right mood, and will recognize it when it gets here. So I'll purposely do other things to distract myself and not have any excuses in my way. And I'll keep thinking about the project and imagine doing it in my mind as a way to get myself in the right frame of mood and mind. Then when that right time does hit me, I have more energy toward the project and I can feel I'm doing a better job than I would have had I forced myself through it earlier. It's even this way when it's a fun project....if I'm not in the right kind of creative mood, then I can't force myself to do as good a job as I hope to if I'm not naturally feeling it. So what I think it all boils down to, is that we learn that we have the ability to choose our level of consciousness and apply it to what we choose to do, rather than allow situations or circumstances to dictate our level of consciousness.
For clairification, you can equate "level of consciousness" to "mood". It's not the same thing but works the same way. If you're in a lower mood, you're not going to be very productive, creative, or open. If you're in a great mood, you're more loving, happy, and open. Our consciousness level works that like. |
