Title: After.Life
Post by Beau on Dec 6th, 2010 at 3:26pm
I just saw After.Life with Leeam Nisson. I thought it was pretty scary and also had a great message in the end. I liked the portrayal of the afterlife in many ways. There was no supreme being or anything, but there was definitely an afterlife.

Just curious what others thought of the afterlife portrayal.

Yours
Beau

Thanks for posting the trailer clip.  Apparently I've turned into a wimp in my old age...that trailer gave me goosebumps!!  It looks good, can't wait to see it.

I'll go rent it tomorrow...it's out to rent, right?  I think I saw it listed at the Redbox but didn't know what it was.  The kids made me get Toy Story 3 anyway.  Which I loved.   :)

Anyway, Beau I think this movie kind of sounds like the same concept as Jacob's Ladder.  What do you think?

Hi Vicky,

Yeah. Jacob's Ladder is a good analogy. It's not exactly like it by any means but if someone asked me to give an example of what its like then Jacob's Ladder would be a very good one to give. There is a sixth senseness about it too, but not at all the same movie. It is scary and definitely not for little kids, but it really got me thinking too about morticians.

Ok, I rented Afterlife the other night and it was definitely on the weird side!  I'm still a little confused about some points in the movie, but maybe they wanted to leave it open to interpretation.

One thing I got about the afterlife aspect was that the girl was in denial about her death, so she was stuck and had no clue how to move on from it.  The mortician certainly wasn't a good role model!  Another thing I got was that he wasn't in that profession to help people move on, just there to get them out of the way.  He said they were taking up the space of those who really wanted to live.

So what I'm confused about is, was she really dead, or was he putting her in a coma with the injections?  It seems she was dead, but I'm not sure if there was a subtle other message or insinuation that she wasn't.  The little boy burying the chick who still appeared to us to be alive, was that signifying that the little chick didn't have much will to live and might as well be done away with??  Remember that he was not as happy as the other chicks...Or was the chick was dead and the boy was able to see his spirit too?

Well, it wasn't a movie I would bother watching again.  A little too weird.   :)

Yeah, it is weird for sure. I liked the open ended ending but I had similar questions about what was REALLY going on. You're right though, I wouldn't watch it again either I don't think, but I do like Justin Long though he was kind of miserable in this movie.

SPOILER ALERT

I think because the boyfriend dies too in the end that she was really dead too, but thats just how it seemed to me and I thought the boy saw the bird's soul like Liam Neeson saw the Girl and Guy, but you aren't supposed to know until the end. I guess if he was actually killing them it would just be another horror movie, but I can see how someone might come away with that impression.

Oh yeah, the other thing I liked though was how Neeson pointed out how these people hadn't lived at all and were corpses all there life and that was why he couldn't wait for them to move on...but he certainly wasn't at all sympathetic to their situation.

I think Neeson's character could foresee people's death.  He seemed to be waiting by the side of the road when the boyfriend died.  Him and the little boy.  And what was with the little boy's mother?  I guess I'll have to Google it to find out what the heck was wrong with her and why.

Creepy movie.   :o

I'm done thinking about it.

Not to seem portentious but can anyone make contact with those in the afterlife with that kind of attitude? I haven't seen the movie so I'm just asking somewhat blindly. Any contact I've seemed to make has been using PUL or  kind consideration, both of which get the heart center involved. From what you all are saying, Neeson's character's heart doesn't seem involved in his work  ;)

He could see spirits, so I'm assuming not just the dead but could also see spirits of the living.  To him, though, if you weren't fully living life you didn't deserve to be living.  For some reason he had this gift, but he didn't have any loving ambition or drive to use it.  It was more of a burden to him I think.

yeah, I think of people who have a gift like that as being rather sweet and good natured, but I have known people with such a gift who wholly admitted they were not crazy about having it and that they would give anything to not have to deal with the other side at all. One friend said the whole thing constantly depressed him. He was not one to sugar coat things for sure.

I saw this Beau and love movies about an afterlife and/or parallel realities.  My all time favorite is “What Dreams May Come”.  People that I’ve talked to about these movies say they are depressing, but I don’t see it that way, especially  in “What Dreams May Come.”  I love the idea that we may live on and can choose how to do that.  “Lost” is another that grabbed my attention.

Thanks SHSS,

Yes, I loved "What Dreams May Come" Too. And I would have to say it is my favorite Afterlife movie also.

When you refer to "Lost" are you talking about the ABC tv series or a movie by that name? I never saw the series so if it is about the afterlife then I am ignorant of it. I was watching 24 when everyone else was watching LOST. :D

You’ve got to see “Lost” Beau.  It is the tv series I’m speaking of and the best one I’ve ever seen.  My goodness, I was so into that series that nothing would have kept me from it.  I don’t want to give it away in case you ever plan to see it.  The seasons are out on DVD.   :D

Interesting movie. What puzzles me was that I thought she will finally realize she was dead and pass on, but I saw her fighting to get out of the casket after she was buried...
She broke all her finger nails in doing that, and after she was 'uncover' and taking out of the casket by the boyfriend, she still show the broken nails...though, may be that did not happened at all? Liam say that  the boyfriend never made it to the cemetery......he got kill before that. Weird movie, I think I will watch it again to see if I can discover a new angle to it.  :o

regards,

eduardo

yes it does leave room for wonder. I think she was really dead and couldn't let go of the physical because of her denial and all, but I can certainly see the possibility for the opposite.
