Title: Is Gary Schwartz & his tests trustworthy? Post by Dr. Who on Nov 7th, 2010 at 10:14am
In his first book especially we have some amazing medium readings that are practically dead on solid hits the whole way through. (The Afterlife Experiments.)
Now I am unable to cite exact references but many skeptics attack his results and say he left huge loop holes and mistakes in his testing process. (However, a lot of these skeptics also fail to go into exact details as to what these huge issues are.) Also, I did watch some sort of video of a news report where a medium was quoted in his works but apparently did not give permission and was publicly upset. (Apparently Gary is using every resource he get's regardless of whether he has the persons approval.) This same news broadcast had a man claiming that Gary took 3 million dollars from him and did not produce the results he wanted in regards to contact with his dead son. (I think the man is a complete moron for handing 3 million dollars to someone that is a proffessor and NOT a medium in the first place... that is idiotic. Frankly, there are tons of mediums all over the world, and with a 3 million dollar fund, the man surely could have had several readings with talented mediums....so... sheesh....) Anyways, back to my main topic here... which is are his experiments THAT un-scientific? Did he really leave huge bulging areas for funny business to go on? |

Hi Dr,
the first thing I would say is that there is no such thing as the perfect scientific experiment- partly because the skeptic can always say in retrospect ' ah, but if only you'd have thought of....' ! I would suggest rather than thinking in a simplistic binary true/false way instead adopt the approach of an open-minded detective. In the case of Prof Schwartz you need to look carefully at his experiments, the critique of his experiments and his responce to that criticism. You can follow the debate online at : http://www.enformy.com/Gary-reHymanReview.htm and come to your own conclusions. Science progresses by people performing experiments/studies which are then peer reviewed. From that process modified further experiments are then undertaken and so on... Criticisms made of Schwartz's work have been taken on board at work undertaken at the Windbridge Institute (www.windbridge.org) resulting in quintuple-blinding (!) with positive resuts still coming through. Of course one thing which is nearly impossible to establish is whether mediums are really contacting discarnates or tapping into 'super-psi' : so current research is looking at this by examining mediums' experiences of the process. |

I believe it is possible for a medium to determine if he is receiving messages from spirits rather than super PSI, because through experience you can learn what it is like when you receive messages from spirits.
If a skeptic hasn't had similar experience, how can he judge what a medium knows? |

The problem I have with 'super psi' as an explanation is that it can act as a vague 'catch all' to lump everything which seems to be paranormal to avoid a conclusion of consciousness survival. Also, of course, it should never be used by people who don't accept paranormal phenomena anyway !

I think the mainstream science community as a whole is not taking medium-ship seriously and instead of attempting to research it on an in depth and scientific level they are scoffing at it, keeping it in the "your a quack area" of science.
No, I am not saying that no one is researching it. I know a few people are.....I am simply saying that it's not enough. We need to really get the ball rolling on this one. |

.... unlike developing new drugs etc, there's no money in it for big companies to be interested... no money = no research ! :(

I found a web site that runs over the details of that tv clip where Gary is attacked on Geraldo.
Shows the video details with link to FOX: http://www.dailygrail.com/essays/afterlife-research-controversy His response and a lot of peoples comments: http://dailygrail.com/Spirit-World/2007/10/Dr-Gary-Schwartz-Responds Check it out and tell me what you guys think. |

As far as I can make out the controversy relates more to 'side issues' such as medium anonymity and funding rather than the actual validity of the research findings. Gary Schwartz no longer conducts medium research- the baton now being passed on to the Windbridge Institute.
