Title: how do you know if you're out of body?
Post by b2 on Apr 6th, 2010 at 12:53pm
Just curious. How do you know if you're out of body? I was meditating this morning, to a cd with words and music, and going 'out of body' was the last thing on my mind (of course, I understand there are lots of different kinds of out of body experiences). I'm not one of those people who have 'vibrations' and find themselves up by the ceiling. Except, that I did. I seemed to be right under the ceiling, looking at it. I thought, oh, is this what it feels like, and just kind of stayed with it, but didn't get any sense of movement. I wondered if my eyes were really closed and if I was seeing something through my eyelids, but I couldn't get a sense of anything being different from normal. It was a weird thing to happen. I couldn't get any sense of movement, because it felt like I was right under the ceiling, and I didn't know what to do. Anyway, I just slipped out of it, fell 'asleep', just deeper, into the meditation. Thought it was worth a mention. Oh, forgot to mention, there were no 'vibrations', just the experience.

Hi b2: did you look down and see your physical body below? Did you have a sense of euphoria or a powerful well being? Of course, next time it happens 'will' yourself to go visit someone.

Mostly all I ever get to do is swish around inside my body so that is very cool that you were out and able to see something.

I didn't see my body, was not 'facing' that way, as far as I can tell. There was no special feeling of euphoria, rather, just a calm feeling of detachment, and slight curiosity. I thought about 'willing' myself 'through' the ceiling, but that was not such an easy thing to 'do', since the 'ceiling' seemed 'real' to me, I guess. Also, since you and Beau replied quickly, I modified my original post for clarity, and there were no 'vibrations', as some people report. Just the experience.

Yay for you, b2 !

If you felt next to the ceiling, you probably were ! For one possibility, your point of consciousness could have been up there without carrying the astral body with it, more like a phasing perhaps.  Many of us start by shedding the outer subtle bodies --and you just shot out from a deeper layer, it seems !  There are lots of ways to get OB, and not all seem to need the preparation of vibrating.

Your sense that the physical ceiling was a barrier is just a perceptual habit that can be overcome. I recall that sensing physical barriers was a real problem for me when I first started leaving the body, before I used Bruce's methods to control the experience. Once you resolve that experience of the non-physical into your consciousness, you'll give your non-physical self permission to do more, I'm sure  :D

Happy sailing!  ;)

I too think this is just as valid as any OOBE I have heard.  However, people, you are concentrating on the physical vehicle when this is a constraining belief.   Whether it is phasing, OOBE, dreaming, or focused imagination, our consciousness is not bound by the physical body - unless of course we believe that it is!

I hate it when people bring up anecdotes from Sci Fi movies, but I feel compelled to, so barf if you must.  There is a scene in The Matrix movies where Neo (the hero) is visiting an Oracle, and in her apartment he sees a bunch of talented kids including a little boy bending a spoon with his mind.  He says "do not try to bend the spoon, that would be impossible."  "Instead, only try to realize the truth......there is no spoon."  "Then you'll see, that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself."

This, to my mind fits the OOBE to a tee.  We are not bound to our physical body except as our belief system tells us we are.  If we realize and believe that there is no restriction (no spoon), we no longer think its such an amazing thing to leave our body to explore, because we realize the body is just a vehicle.  One we shed when we die.

Hey b2,

Sounds like an OBE to me!  There doesn't have to be vibrations by the way.

How can you tell you're out of body?  Just the fact that your conscious awareness was focused away from normal waking conscious awareness.

People tend to judge an OBE by if you can prove something was real.  That's not the correct way to look at it.  That's not the point.  The point is that your awareness was focused on something not of your normal waking conscious awareness.  In other words, from where you were sitting you would not normally have that view and feeling of being so close to the ceiling.  Your awareness was "away" from where it normally should have been.

So experiences like deja vu and remote viewing are a couple forms of OBE.  A lot of psychic experiences are too.  Even lucid dreaming.  People always want to separate "true" OBE from everything else but the truth is there are many forms and degrees.

I'd say you had a classic OBE there.  Now you just need to loosen up your thinking so that you are not limited from being able to move through the ceiling or unable to do anything else you want to do.

Wow, ok, guys, it just took me by surprise, but how do you get the 'body' or 'point of consciousness' moving? It didn't seem like I could just 'think' myself somewhere, but had a subtle feeling of 'effort' when I imagined going through the ceiling, but no movement. Oh, well. Maybe some other time...

The rule is when in the Astral... your intention or will controls your movement and experience thereof.

I didn't "know" until I had made it back inside my physical body. It was really strange.

Right before I got back in the bed, I had  a STRONG urge to look at the clock.

Then there was like a little popping feeling and I woke up facing the wall (not the clock)

I immediately turned over and it was the same time on the clock.

That's when i realized what happened.

Regarding how to move, maybe it's not that effective to focus on the movement itself, but on the location you want to go to. For example, you see something, and then you imagine to be there.

Yes, Spooky, this certainly works in Lucid Dreams so I would conclude the same for OOB travel. Intent drives the show.

What a good idea, Supermodel. There is no clock within view of where I meditate. There would be no way for me to see it unless I actually went over and looked at it. That would be a good test, if I could ever manage it.

Spooky, your comment makes a lot of sense. I was 'preoccupied' with the 'ceiling' to the point where I never actually thought about 'where' I would be going if I went 'through' it. Rather than focus on going 'through' it, I could have focused on a particular 'place' to be, and even, to do so in stages, if I could stay lucid. For instance, up in the sky (I know how to fly, have done so in dreams), then, to wherever else.

So, the idea is to focus on what you want, not on what you don't want, correct?

Last night I had so many dreams. It felt like I was far too busy to rest. I woke up with the words 'Jesus people' in my mind, but someone else had said it, I think. It was someone's voice, out of several around me. I don't use that phrase, and never have, to my knowledge. There was something that needed to be done, regarding the 'Jesus people', but I don't know what it was. Not that it has anything to do with this, I suppose, but perhaps I need to practice dream lucidity, just like a novice, as Beau hints at. More awareness! More awareness! I feel like banging my spoon on my tray like a baby in a high chair.... :)

:-) not too bad. It's funny, in a more "classic" obe, these tricks are very helpful. Imagine you're standing against a wall oob and you're thinking "I want to go through that CONCRETE WALL". Chances are you won't do it :) . It's easier to imagine to be on the other side of that wall, as strange as it sounds, then you would just "click" through it. But once it happens you actually move into and through a wall (or something similar) and you experience the feeling, from that moment on it will be no problem anymore.

Hi b2: If I may ask, what formal program are you using to accomplish the o.b.e... ?

Formal program, Seraphis? None, I just kind of do my own thing, a little of this, a little of that. Mostly, I just listen.

Have you thought of following in Michael Saganski's footsteps and doing Robert Bruce's 90 day program and posting your progress giving us another play by play look at the process?

That is an interesting idea, Seraphis, but I am presently committed to absolute freedom. There is no alternative for me, as I see it.
