Title: Does Buddy Holly Offend?
Post by Beau on Nov 10th, 2009 at 8:56am
Hello Y'all,

I may have offended some by saying that Buddy Holly is my "savior". It was not my intent, but I know who Buddy was and I invite you to listen to him sometime, but you have to listen the way I do. I pretend that he is singing directly to me. I don't get into some homophobic ridiculousness with it. I just sit back as though it was all for me and me only. The message is pure and simple "I' Love You" is what he is saying with every breath and his is like no other I have ever encountered. I say if Jesus or whatever was here he would be as Buddy Holly. All I can say is I'm not deifying Buddy, but if I had to deify someone it would be him.

When I hear Peggy Sue, I hear "Peg Jesu" Hey Sue, get it?

Just wanted to give my reason for my feelings on this.

Comments are welcome but not necessary.

My love to all of you.

And I get that maybe this is my own secret, but I would share Buddy Holly with anyone.

Be gentle :)

Yours,
Beau

Yes it is. Sorry I meant to post this in Off Topic but I somehow put it here by accident. Sorry about that.

Hi Beau,

I enjoy forays into such other aspects of our souls and consciousness.
And I feel the same way about Dan Fogleberg's music !

It brings up the question of how much of the 'heart's intelligence'
is involved with consciousness. And what It all connects to  :)

My son lives about 4 hours from me on Hilton Head and at the first of the year I wrote this song for him. His name is William but I have always called him Buddy for short. Holly's real name was Charles.

I CALL YOU BUDDY

I call you Buddy
Cause you’re a real cool dude
You were named for Buddy Holly
He’s cool dude too

I still remember how we used to rock and roll all night
When you were oh so small and fair
Shaking your head from Left to right
(From your high chair)
We would jam those songs so tight
And keep your mama up all night
Man, we had a ball to share
I guess back then we were really living right

Do you pay attention
Can you hear his call?
Holly is no myth my son
He’s still singing his songs for us all

Rock and Roll makes the world go round
Taking us to heights anew
But can you hear the message in his sound?
Played before you by the truth

Teenagers sang out in time
That the music surely had died in ‘59

There’s more to those tunes than meets the eye
Listen to Me and Take Your Time
Maybe baby I was lost somehow
In a fool’s paradise
Maybe I threw you a pair of dice
I know that makes it tough
The music growing inside of you
To me, Bud that’s enough

I call you Buddy
Cause you’re a real cool dude
You were named for Buddy Holly
He’s cool dude too

I just can’t wait to see you again
How long has it been my friend?
Times make it rough up here little guy
But that don’t mean that I won't try

Know you are the light for me
And everything I’ll ever be
Is caught up in what you, Will, see
As you open up your heart
To the sounds of the music in the Park

Do you pay attention
Can you hear his call?
Holly is no myth my son
He’s still singing his songs for us all

Rock and Roll makes the world go round
Taking us to heights anew
But can you hear the message in his sound?
Played before you by the truth

Teenagers sang out in time
That the music had surely died in ‘59

There’s more to these tunes than meets the eye
Listen to me and Take your time
Maybe baby I was lost
In a fool’s paradise
Maybe I threw you a pair of dice
And I know that makes it tough
The music growing inside of you
To me, Bud, that’s enough

I call you Buddy
Cause you’re a real cool dude
You were named for Buddy Holly
He’s cool dude too

Beau, I don't think you should worry about what others think about who you call a "savior." Personally, I think the Jesus lovers are a bit off their rockers. See how easy it is not to care if you offend?

Back at-cha Goobygirl, but I guess I like to keep the peace where possible. Thank you.

I know what you mean. But then again many people professing to be Christians don't act like one anyhow.

Many are quick to temper when you mention anything about their religion.

And have the gall to think they should instill it in the classroom simply because they view themselves as being in the majority and want to do so regardless of nonbelievers' viewpoints.

If you think Buddy Holly is a savior, so be it. I had someone jump down my throat online yesterday because I said I would not give up, just like MLK Jr would not give up.

This person took it to say that I was the next MLK Jr! I guess I messed with his "savior" in some way, which is totally whacked.

So be yourself and let your own opinions be your opinions. Forget keeping the peace...no one else is really interested in it....I'm sure of this..

I love the song, Beau, it touches my heart. Thanks so much for sharing it here. I think that's the sweetest thing, to write a song for your son.

I don't know much about Buddy Holly, but I found a song or two on U-tube that I liked.

I guess really the Music tied with something greater. That'll be the Day, when Buddy Holly dies.

Woo Hoo!! Buddy Holley Lives!!!

Thank you very much Old Dood

Yer quite welcome Beau!

Here is the Wiki Link to that song.
What is still debatable is who are the people he is singing about...some of it is pretty obvious but Don McLean will not comment...

BTW: I just played that YouTube for my wife.  She remembers each and every lyric and sang along.
It is one of those tunes that sticks with you for a long time...
Nostalgic...a time from your past that you ache to feel again. :)
It makes me feel Melancholy...but, that is not a bad thing!

Amen, Old Dood!  And Beau, too!  I was 16 in 59 and remember it well.  Back then, being a Buddy Holly fan was a bit on the wild side where I was glad to be.  And I've listened to Don McLean's song many, many times and remembered those feelings all over again each time.  It can still bring a tear.  Thanks for pointing the way to it.

I'm a Gonna Love you Too

You're gonna say you'll a miss me
You're gonna say you'll a kiss me
You're gonna say you'll love me
Cause I'm a-Gonna Love You Too

It's a gonna happen some day
You're gonna see things my way
Your gonna say you'll a love me
Cause I'm a-Gonna Love You Too

After all another fella took ya
But I still can't overlook ya
I'm a-gonna do my best to hook ya
After all is said and done

You're gonna say you'll a miss me
You're gonna say you'll a kiss me
You're gonna say you'll a love me
Cause I'm a-Gonna Love You Too

Intro = 8 bars singing 'Ah' over guitar
Finish = 16 bars

I could have been anyone who said it, even Jesus (Yes us) But it was Buddy Holly in 1958. Now to this I can relate.

Yours,

Beau

I have a metal box, acquired over 50 years ago, in which I stored about 75 45's from pre-1960, including three Buddy Holly's, Rave On/Take Your Time, It Doesn't Matter Anymore - Heartbeat/It's Raining in My Heart - Early in the Morning, Peggy Sue/Everyday, plus others by Paul Anka, Sal Mineo, Tommy Sands, Buddy Knox, Everly Brothers, etc. and of course, the classic, The Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley.  I don't have a turntable, but I've got the original material, carefully indexed in my teenage handwriting.  I know we have to let go of material things, but it's rather comforting to have this box of records.

Early in the Morning is certainly one of Holly's best tunes but they're all stupendous in my opinion of course. He happened in to the studio while Bobby Darin was recording it and Bobby asked him to do sing a version too. He hadn't even really had a chance to look at it and BAM one the greatest songs of our time. I love the Gospel feel. Go Spell I say! Words are worlds when you put a the first letter of Love in the middle. ;)

When you were speaking of 'Early in the Morning' I thought of another tune...by Peter, Paul, & Mary.
Buddy Holly - Early In The Morning, 1958-45 Record

Peter, Paul, & Mary's version...
Peter Paul and Mary, Early in the Morning
This is one of my all time favorites...
