Title: Meditation Tingling - Common?
Post by goobygirl on Sep 3rd, 2009 at 2:11pm
When I go into deep mediation I tingle all over, like a body part has "fallen asleep" or lost circulation. Is this common? My husband says it happens to him and I have to ignore it. Any ideas/suggestions?

It's relatively normal. You may find some more exotic explanations, but muscle relaxation and the release of blood to surface capillaries with this relaxation are probably a factor....

Hi,

Those signs and causes could also signal that your astral body is loosening from the physical.

Your fingers or limbs don't then eventually go numb, do they?  that would mean the tingling was a warning that circulation is cut off, if you're in a position that doesn't allow full circulation.

Bets

Everything goes numb, and sometimes odd parts ache like my elbows, shoulders, etc.

My  muscles are sometimes sore in general, so that could be a factor. I meditate lying down.

I admire your ability to meditate lying down.  When I have tried that, I immediately fell asleep.  The basic meditation technique I've been taught involves sitting on a gomden (a firm rectangular cushion) which is on a zafu (larger flat cushion) or on a chair if you have hip or knee problems, taking an upright posture, legs crossed, hands on thighs, chin slightly tucked, eyes down but open with a relaxed gaze.  One is supposed to be both relaxed and comfortable but upright and alert as you follow your breath.  Which is much easier said than done.

When I meditate, after a while I know I am settling down (at last) when my body begins to experience flooding sensations of expansion, like it is becoming a balloon, the feeling fades, then it comes back, then fades, then comes back in a rhythmic fashion. It makes me catch my breath, it is very ecstatic. Around that time I can sink into the quietness. I do find when beginning to meditate and trying to settle down, I get itches everywhere as I begin to attempt the movement away from the day's busy tension. The itches stop, after about 40 minutes usually, sometimes longer, when the ballooning begins, then I know I am on my way. Vee

I get itches too! But the thing is with my physical condition, it is very difficult to sit on a cushion. I either have to be in something like a reclining chair or lying down on my tempurpedic bed. I can maintain consciousness, it's just the tingling sensation and itching really bugs me!

I also meditate lying down, it's just easier for me to get completely relaxed.  I have also experienced the tingling sensation you are talking about as well.  In fact today, while I was meditating, I got a huge rush of tingles start from my feet and move it's way up to my head.  Then my fingers started to tingle and the feeling rushed through my hands and up my arms.  I could literally feel energy moving from my feet and hands and up through my body and out through my head.  It feels interesting, but it's best to acknowledge it and then focus back on your breathing.  Meditation bring on a lot of very weird sensations!!
